Thanks Perk! Working this thing on dop was SO difficult for me! I had to put the dop on the largest area there on the left side. It was completely off-center. I usually rely on the dop to help judge my angles when grinding...but with it being off-center, I couldn't do that. That does sound tough. It looks great to me! If I had a bad drop, I'd be Waaaaayyyy of center. My slant cabber is set at a 45 degree angle. Normally, if I keep the dop completely vertical (straight up and down) then I'm getting that initial 45 degree grind I want - and I can alter the angle of the dop to get the subsequent grinds to create the dome. Since the dop was off-center on this, I had to watch the back of the cab the entire time...which doesn't sound like it should be difficult...but it was for me! LOL

I was so inspired by jasoninsd 's beautiful creation that I picked through my preforms and found the perfect piece of Burro Creek to work on ... I almost had the dome shaped ... and it broke Dang.

Well, sometimes when things go terribly wrong and we're feeling down about it, all we need is a good motivational speaker to pick ourselves back up! (My ALL-TIME favorite SNL skit!) Or perhaps you just need a quick pick-me-up! Sidenote - I haven't watched SNL for MANY years! It hasn't been funny for a very long time!

I tend to ponder the day while cabbing. I just got my contest entry (No longer) done by killing all of the crystals. Sigh. Gotta love Wednesdays. On the bright side, I got a nice tiny oval done. Now I gotta find me some new material to enter. I just got a response today from my rock shop and I won a tumbler!!! I'll post a thread once I pick it up. How the heck did I get myself this off topic. 😂

My submission: Rainbow Hematite from Brazil. This is rare material and is found in thin slices of pure rainbow druzy. I have had this piece sitting around a long time so when I cleaned out my bench projects this was on the list. The material being rather thin and brittle, (though this particular piece is pretty thick for the material) needs to be backed and shaped. It can not be domed, but it is a cab. I used JB Weld to back it since the back side looks like the front and is uneven and bumply due to the crystals. It needed to be leveled, too. It is a big piece at 37 x 17mm.
Here is the first pass of JB Weld.
Then I decided that I wanted it a little thicker. I couldn't cut it any closer with a blade due to vibrations- I didn't want to risk the stone. It would all have to be ground down and shaped very carefully to avoid the wheel chipping the druzy off. It is plate like material, so no telling how much would come off.
Here it is shaped under an incandescent bulb. My camera had a hard time with the crazy light and color!
I had to shape it dopless, which I am not used to doing, at all.
Here it is under halogen lights. You see how thick the one side is? The dark, silvery, uneven line is polished hematite. (Pardon my dirty nails. I just finished cabbing.)
Here is a light tent picture.
This stuff lives up to it's name. The druzy is just insanely vivid and bright! This will end up in a high end piece of jewelry.
I'll get an outside picture up when I get it.
Thank you for your consideration. I rarely enter the contest, but when druzy came up, I knew I had to and it gave me an excuse to finish it.

Very cool material. I bet it took a ton of patience to cab.

I was worried about ruining it. I'm gonna hold onto this until I do some silver work again. I did a wrap with it once and it held up, but I think solder would be better.

Not an entry. I had a Blue Mountain slab with druzy. It would make a nice cab without it. I had never seen BMJ with it before so I had to include it.
