@hplcman I almost asked about the hardness. That second piece looks just like the chunks of wave polished serpentine that I find loads of over in the Big Sur to Pismo and beyond. I'm astounded at the data base of rocks that's being stored in Bravura Cabochon Designs brain. On a side note if you look up Franciscan Chert there's some pretty cool pics of formations in the East Bay area. |

hplcman the rock is a piece of fransiscan chert. It’s microcrystalline quartz similar to jasper or agate, the formation is what differs from the other two. In short it’s lithified silica rich sea floor. Thanks for the information! I'm just starting with all of this, and really appreciate you guys sharing the knowledge. I looked up fransiscan chert and it's a fascinating story. I hike out the the beackes at Pt. Reyes National Seashore and there's a great example of this layered chert at the north end of Kellan Beach. I'll try to post a picture of it later on today. |

I don't normally shucks it sure was a good day. Old stock from an 80 year olds uncle! Interesting looking little saw. Home built it looks old and robust. The hunk of obsidian in the vise from who knows when was a really smooth cut no marks to the eye I have high hopes. More posts to come. I hope there's still not Velveeta in that box!  Two 8 inch native copper strands look like fern leaves! Pretty diehard to take the passenger seat out to fit more rocks too! Lol, I'm assuming that isn't your daily ride. It damn straits is! I'm crazy about the air cooled! |

Probably the closest thing I'll ever find to a moss agate, very interesting rock. Hope it tumbles well.... Quartzite with quartz veins? Whaddayathink  Couple of nice pieces of coral, that little guy is fully intact
A good example of a conchodial fracture. I don't even remember where I heard it was a marker of agates or if it's even true I still look for that marking either way.  |

Well I didn't actually find it, I bought it - BUT when we moved to Napa at the end of 2018 I lost track of it. I looked for it a few times and sadly figured I must have lost it but that made no sense. Anyway, I was digging to the bottom of a milk crate a few days ago and there it was. It's from here in Napa County - from the original Manhattan Mine which was producing cinnabar originally. Eventually the MM got swallowed up by what was the McLaughlin Mine which was a huge open pit gold mine which has now been cleaned up and turned into a "natural reserve" and lake which makes no sense considering nothing natural remains. Anyway, the reserve is owned(?) by the University of California. Regarding the ID of the material, it was first identified here on the forum by Mel Sabre52 , then confirmed by an old timers in the Lake County gem club. I've also seen the identical material for sale several times at local shows around the area. Given that the original Manhattan cinnabar mine literally does not exist on earth anymore I don't know how much more naturally unobtainable a material could get so I consider it my rarest piece and I'm happy it returned home and I'm not even mad at it. Oh, boy I'm glad I found this thread! Sometimes I find a rock that I want to post, but I don't want to start a whole thread on it. So, don't make fun of me, but I was SO excited when I found this awesome piece of oolitic rock on a gravel road near my house today. I find tons of oolitic chert and chalcedony around here, but usually the oolites are much smaller. I have found some other oolites this big, but the whole rock was much smaller. Now I just have to decide what to do with it. The possibilities are endless!     Erica, that may be the coolest piece of oolite I've ever seen. Excellent find!  |
