I don't know about that driving out there to pick 'em up part!
Price per pound just went through the roof if I do that.

Being there in person and able to cherry pick such a pile would be worth a drive. Getting whatever the seller ships is a concern.

with shipping that comes out to $1.60 per lb. maybe i should drive over and fill up the GMC? If you drive over there you won't have to pay shipping!

Maybe doing the coarse tumble then drill before moving on. The finishing stages should clean up the hole.

Have enjoyed watching the journey here and looking forward to kiln experiments and usage.
I don't understand the market for these. I'm not artsy, so maybe I'm missing something. What would folks do with these, wire wrap them like cabs? I could see them in a vase or fish tank, but that would be kinda expensive fill for such. So whatcha planning to do with them?

Maybe some variety of onyx or travertine.

No telling if crumpybumpy will ever return, so my response is to the post by MrCoffee . Not going to bother with what rocks to tumble, up to the individual. Tumbling instructions close enough, again figure out what works for you. Check that slurry isn't getting too thick with multiple grit recharges. May {probably} need to add rough rocks to the load during the coarse grind if the volume of rocks is decreasing significantly. By the time you move to medium and fine grits, you may not have enough rocks left to make a full load. Adding ceramic media or other media of your choice may be necessary. If you need to make up volume in the polish stage, you may consider using plastic pellets as filler. As to the care of the Model B, I think removing the rubber liner from the barrel each time it is empty is rather excessive - and I thought I was anal! I do remove my liners now and then, maybe a couple times a year on each barrel and I spray the inside of the metal barrel with WD 40 and fit the rubber liner back in. I oil the nylon bearings on the shafts each time I do a clean out. Oiling the motor is just one drop of oil down the oil port on each end of the top of the motor. Figure I do that once a month same as MrCoffee . Not sure that more is better when oiling the motor.

This is one amazing thread. Appears that the sellers know you are a serious buyer now. They know you are knowledgeable and will give their collection the utmost care. They are offering up some items not for sale to the public. Those items may come with a huge price tag. Or, they may give you an amazing deal, since you have already given them a lot of money. All I can say is go with your gut. If you like it, it is rare for you to find, if it is good quality, if it is reasonably priced (for what it is), then go for it! In all likelihood, you have been their best customer. How do you think they would be for negotiating a package deal on some things? Thanks Fern, very insightful post. Yes, they knew I wasn't some lookie loo within minutes of my showing up last weekend. I identified rocks that he figured no one knew and I'm pretty sure he was impressed - but not nearly as I was by their collection. And soon by them. They had folks show up when I was there last week that left with 20 or 30 bucks worth of crap rocks. Those people had NO idea what was there! Hell, I don't even understand what all they have. Well, maybe I do, but I'm just astounded by such a collection. I'll get there. *smile* I had never met anyone of this caliber (rock wise) other than Mel. And they are just "normal" folks but with rock knowledge and stories (been there done that) that there is no way I can ever have. I envy that more than most anything else I can think of. Even more than the rocks themselves. ETA: I don't truly envy anyone's collection. I appreciate it! I treasure rocks. Would rather have my rock collection than fancy houses or cars or a Picasso or whatever some other folks might consider worthwhile. I want this collection to grow until I can't collect anymore. These days that just means better and better quality rocks. I've run out of room for rocks that aren't the best I can find. "How do you think they would be for negotiating a package deal on some things?" I already tried to buy the house with ALL the rocks. Didn't work. They are keeping the "good stuff". *grumble* This collection gives me an opportunity to add to my collection. Not sure that I'm going to get any "deals" over there, but I appreciate the opportunity to even see it. Being able to purchase some of it and make it mine is a huge plus. I will see these rocks for years to come and remember these people. They have already told me that I was their "best" customer for this sale so far. And I plan to blow last week out of the water come Saturday. Such opportunities are very few in my world. I shall not squander it. I'm sure that when I make it to the Tucson show I'll spend more, but it won't mean as much to me as this does. Or nearly as much as Mel's collection has meant to me. (THANK YOU SIR!) Impossible to explain.

Life Pro Tip The geode kid had many people dig with him. He was famous and he loved meeting people from what I can tell. I wish I had had such an opportunity. Sure there were good stories there! I don't really know who these people are, but I was asking a couple questions (email) about some cycads I bought last week. The reply was: We did not collect the cycads. We got them from a guy in Worland, Wyoming (who was so excited to have us visit, that he asked the local paper to come and interview/photograph us). He told me that they were from South Dakota. They seem pretty normal to me. I did get one of her CDs to listen to on the drive home. Pretty darn good singer! Think Joan Baez, Diamonds and Rust kinda stuff. What it reminded me of anyway. I don't think it was the being a singer thing that had the guy excited though. No clue. But I'm gonna be getting her other CDs when I go back! Still wish I had met The Geode Kid.

Just out on the back porch with the wife unit - letting the dogs out - and I told her that I was going back to Cocoa on Saturday. Back porch where all these latest rocks are. She said: I'll kill you if you die and leave me with all these rocks to deal with. I replied: I'll already be dead. She said: I'll kill you again! Mission Accomplished!
