Yet another good reason not to live there.
In case anyone needed one ...

I can't see 800 pounds of rock being in a 55 gal barrel. Maybe 800 pounds if the barrel was full of cement, but rocks usually have spaces between them. The larger the rocks, the more empty space. I had 3 full 55 gal barrels of rocks shipped up from Brazil and don't think that any of the barrels weighed more than 500 pounds.

A can of "clear coat" is much less expensive than a tumbler. And much quicker too.
Buy a can (maybe some kinda polyurethane?) and try it. See if that produces the results you are looking for. If not, maybe a tumbler can do what you want.
Welcome to the forum.

I am sure the pictures he posts will include my favorite of the ones we cut. A nice blended pastel colored piece of wood. Would post a picture myself but will defer to Jeremy's superior photography skills. *ahem*

I would put it in a prominent place as a reminder what not to do. I have had a spent shotgun shell on my desk for exactly that same reason. Smile every time I see it. Long story... cost me a couple hundred bucks, but a good lesson learned.

Line the inside with some kinda foam and it would make a nice drink holder.
All sorts of uses for that!
Does it smell when it melts?

I recall seeing a few threads with oil cleaning systems here in the past. I have no idea how to search for those threads.

I would not be surprised to see you faceting next. While I have no doubt that he could do so, I don't see it happening. Jim is too much of a giddy up and go type. You are just as likely to see him doing needle point as faceting - IMO Maybe when he is 90 or being rode hard and put away wet finally settles him down.

Melissa, you are much more of the social butterfly than I am. Meeting some folks from here would be icing on the cake, but I would go for the cake rocks.
Billy, I have no set plans. Mother in Law is coming down to Florida for January & February. She will be spending some time elsewhere, but quite a bit here as well. Having her here allows me to take off as she can take care of the critters. When she figures out a schedule I will know more about when I want to get outta Dodge. Figure if I can get out that way I may bounce around from place to place. It was in the 80s there last January, no tellin' if Mother Nature will be so kind this year. If I go, I doubt it would be before deer hunting season ends on the 24th of January. Would want to hit some new areas as the places I covered last year are now rather lacking in rocks, and a lot of that land is private property which we were allowed to access because Jim had made friends and arrangements with the land owners.

Nice! Looks a bit like Stone Canyon jasper might look after a rough night out on the town.

Looks like (Google) Needle Peak (mountain) is in a National Park? Is there a specific collecting area outside the park?

I'm pretty sure that there are stamps that are worth in the 100s of thousands. Could be trouble. Definitely lighter tho!
