Wow, I've never, ever, had gas in a tumbling load. I hear about it frequently, but I've never experienced it. Others have suggested it's organic material, like algae or dirt on the rocks. Dunno.

I don't think you need the lexan or glass, unless you're intentionally displacing the water so you have less to look through. I've used a bucket with the bottom cut out to look for agates in the Mississippi.

Reminds me of a trip to Big Bend a couple of years ago. We were hiking back up a canyon when a deer flew by us like it was running for its life. Turned out it was: other hikers saw a mountain lion chasing it earlier up the trail. We never saw the lion, thank goodness.
The bear spray works well on people, too! We had some at Glacier and my son was following the directions to learn how to use it. He fired a brief test shot into the wind and gassed the campers in the neighboring site (and me, too). Potent stuff!

That's a nice one Fossilman! I've got a couple that are nearly that good.
They're also called "black diamonds". Yes, they're quartz, like Herkimer diamonds. The spot on Judith Mountain is easy to recognize, but kind of a challenge to get to unless you know the area or are persistent. Once you get to the location you'll see thousands of them in matrix and some weathered out.

If you think it takes a lot to fill a UV-10, try a UV-18! I got a good deal on the tumbler on ebay, but there are times when I wish I had a UV-10 instead.
Good advice by all. I also just put the rocks in wet and add grit. I use the Rock Shed guidelines, but have been meaning to try less grit. Like Daniel, I just do harder stones.
Make sure you really fill the bowl. If you don't, the rocks just hammer against each other and will cause a dull finish instead of a shine. It's also really important to have a good mix of sizes; I try to use 2/3rds pea size or smaller.

Good advice from John and Daniel. I also start my Lakers in a rotary, but use a UV-18 for every step after that.
You can spray the pits out with high pressure, either from a dry cleaning gun or a hose with a cap that has a very small hole in it. Or you can go after them with a brush.

Sure James! I run at about 25 also. I just planned to add the lifters from the beginning so that I would have better tumbling action.

Well, I couldn't find my original post of my build, so here are some photos: Side View: Drive End: Linked Drive End: Caps (waterproofed plywood): Lifters: Barrel Interior with Lifters (I've since added 4 more): End without 4" Test Plug Installed: Because I developed leaks from the caps when they were just sealed with Liquid Nails, I added threaded rod through the PVC lifters and put nuts and washers on the outsides of the caps to pull the caps tighter onto the barrel. That worked well. Broken Seal that Lead to Threaded Rod: If you use PVC lifters, be sure to add a fillet between the lifter and the barrel side, otherwise rocks will get wedged in there. Chuck

Marijuana is the #2 cash crop of Oregon. Guess they just found a semi-legal market. I grew out of it myself after leaving college, but I must say that I've seen many more drunks do stupid/dangerous things than stoners. I'd much rather the money go to legitimate businesses than organized crime. Might see some of the violence across the border, decrease too, if pot were broadly legalized.
I'm with Mel on decriminalizing most drugs. I'm not as concerned with coke users as I am meth and crack users, for the reasons Mel cited. I think most coke users would be satisfied with a couple of strong cups of coffee; a lot cheaper, lasts longer, and basically the same high.

Welcome Riverwalker!
Would love to see pics of the 10 lb carnelian.
You can polish small slabs in a tumbler (especially a vibratory one).

Hi James,
I hear you on the weight. I have a 70 lb. tumbler out of 10 inch PVC (wood caps) and it's hard on my back. I was thinking of using an engine hoist to lift it...
Keep up the good work and the running diary!

I'm sure you could modify the design to seal the bottom, but why bother? I'd rather spend my time working the stones than building equipment like this that is ready made.
