Hi Berma, can't help you with the local rocks there. Vancouver island is a seperate chunk of land from the rest of BC. in more ways than one. up at the northern tip you will find nephrite too. Lots of different minerals and rocks to tumble and cut. Welcome Lloyd

here is the grinder and some of the disks, grinding wheel, rotary bits; I have more and emory cloth. I forgot to mention that the drill press also makes an easy to use drill for holes by mounting a drill or burr in the chuck. I can drill through 1/4 inch of jade in 2 minutes. Attachments:

there was some question as to my veracity and as to whether I could cut and polish the stones I post using what I say I do ;D. Here is a picture I took when I first started of the cutter with a bunch of local material I cut; I use a different blade now. The adjustable table I slide the material on makes for a nice even cut and is easy to adjust up and down either using the table adjustment or the drill head. I have attachments that I mount in the chuck for polishing/buffing and with the motor speed adjustments on the pulleys in the head can quickly go from low to high speed. I also have a flexible shaft attachment that installs in the chuck that I can put different cutting tools in for carving and shaping. when I am actually cutting/polishing I have a guard that goes around the table to stop the snot from flying everywhere. When I'm finished cutting I can flip my variable speed grinder on it's back and bungee it to the table for another flat polisher so I have the round one above and the flat below. You can see a cheap tile saw in the background; it's been sitting there rusting since the first time I used it; figured there had to be a better way. Attachments:

I'm still looking but here's a ice jadeite cab I just did; it's 5/8ths of an inch long and only polished to 1500 diamond at this point. I've since finished it. It looks rough because it is the very outside of the rock where the miner chunked a peice of to see what it was. Underneath this was the cab I posted last weekend. Still looking for the pictures; my stuff is outside or I'd go get a fresh picture, it's dark. tomorrow. Attachments:

yes I bungee cord it to my drill press bed and have a guard to collect the spray of water and a siphon gallon water drip controlled by an aquarium air valve. I tried two of the 4 inch pads and decided to get the 5inch; much nicer. I just got some diamond flat lap pads I use on it too for roughing but the flexie pads do a much nicer job polishing. I'm still looking for the pictures I have on the computer of the setup.

I would have to somewhat disagree; that's what makes life interesting; different points of veiw. I use the wet polisher for everything but as I've never had a grinder setup, I guess I don't know what I'm missing but it would be nice to have both I guess. I'd buy the wet and keep the other too.
