no dinos or mammoths in the Devonian era fossils where we live, but I can always hope I find a glacial erratic. can't even imagine how cool it would be to find something like this. as far as the state taking it, I guess they could have it. I couldn't hope to preserve and display something like that, and its way too cool to cut and polish!

fantastic! It has a sort of resemblence to some of JamesP's botryoidal coral heads... that is just beautiful!

it sounds great out there, waves booming off the rock bottom. All the rocks rattling across themselves back and forth... be sure to post your finds!

we all love food, right? I am baking grandma's pressed oatmeal cookies today. The recipe came over from Germany/Austria with one of her grandmas, not sure which side. If you follow the recipe exactly it makes the best tasting cookie ever. Substitutions will alter texture and flavor. I look forward to colder weather and baking season every year. Please share a favorite recipe which you use in colder weather.
Grandmas pressed oatmeal cookies. 1/2 cup of white sugar 1/2 cup of brown sugar 1/2 cup of lard 1/2 cup of butter cream together in large bowl and add 2 medium to small eggs mixing together add 2 cups of flower. soak 1 cup of raisins in 1 cup of hot water until soft and drain very( a paper towel works just fine for this) well. run them through a grinder (or today we can use a food processor) to make paste of the raisins. individual raisins should not be identifiable. mix with flour mixture. add 1 tsp of cinnamon, 1 tsp of soda, continue to mix ingredients, slowly adding 2 cups of oatmeal. place dough by spoonful on greased cookie sheet and press very thin with floured fingers, sprinkle with sugar or cinnamon/sugar mixture bake at 350 until the cookies are lightly brown on the edges and dry looking. use a spatula to remove from sheet and cool. the cookie will set and be very crispy.
thanks for looking. My kids are not interested in baking and I don't want this great recipe to die with me. preserving my heritage on a rock forum. who knew?

after an IL trip I finally got to go back to my beloved lake the other day. Over a series of 3 days I went to 6 different locations. The wind and waves have been high here and because the water level in Lake Huron is so high, there is lots of erosion and shifting of material on the lakefront.
below- note the shale under the bushes on the lower left? that went out for 20-30 feet last year, the underlying rocks have been washed of sand and shale as far as the bushes, when the water is quiet it will be right up to them. no more beach!
Many places exposed which have probably been hidden for eons. I will have a good deal of trouble accessing one of my favorite hunting locations, as most of what was beach is now under water and the best place is beneath a sort of cliff/ cut away hill that is too steep to climb. I'll have to make my own path through the woods to get to it now. Outdoors adventure for sure. did find a couple of interesting ones on the last trip out. One passable pudding stone and this odd thing.
rainy today, going to stay in and make grandma's recipe for pressed oatmeal cookies. makes the house smell so good. have a great day!

Life is good. Hope you and chassroc each find something fun to do today. best wishes for a happy birthday and many more.
