Re the Teepees: Just MHO. Were it me,I'd avoid the ones that are just red jaspery centers and stick to those with strong fortifications, especially if the fortifications show nice multi colors. Fractures probably matter more if you plan to face polish them. Cabbers just care about getting a clean section to cab.
I've never seen enough Belvedere Jasper to make the call but what I have seen is not as fancy as Bob's example.
Don't forget to really raid the dino bone pile Bob. IMHO much more desirable than the teepee stuff if they have colorful stuff at good prices. And good cycad showing the diamond patterns especially, is super rare. Utah cycad is especially nice and colorful. Watch for an example of the beautiful back and white tempskya fern from Eden Valley Wyoming too. Super desirable stuff..Mel

Bob, You are right, our rock hunting vehicle when we went there and to the Dryhead diggins too was our first new car, a VW minibus. Think it cost about $3000 and I remember our payments were $36.00 per month. Great vehicle. Took it to hundreds of rock hunting sites, many where we should have had a 4 X 4, when we'd go on driveabout. Inflation huh?
I saw pics of the Baker ranch pits in more modern times. Huge! Was just a little depression in the desert with water in the bottom when we were there. Probably the coolest digs I ever went on. Though extremely lonely and isolated. You'd hit a seam of eggs and rounds would be sticking out all over the place. Ash was so sharp though, that you'd wear your rock pick head to a nubbin in a couple of days *L*. Big Diggins was neat too except all surface collecting when we were there.....Mel

Always make sure your cinch is tight! Horses tend to step on anything dangling beneath them, including you. ( learned that one on an especially interesting date)
And one from last week: When driving calves down the chute to the pinch cage, get close as you can as fast as ya can and approach with yore legs turned sideways or yore arse to them cause getting close doesn't allow an extended kick and being kicked in the ass hurts way less than being kicked in the kneecap *L*....Mel

Fraid I'm not much help on the Oregon hunk as there are just so many places with similar material up that way. I can think of four possibilities 1. Piaute jasper from central Oregon, 2. Amity Creek Moss, Stephen Mtn , Ore ( good plume there too) 3. Beulah Jasper from Beulah Reservoir, Ore and 4. Marsten Ranch Jasper/wood. Last place is a really good bet as it's the most common of all those sites collected bu hobbiests.
Wow friggin awesome Teepees you got. Great fortifications and colors. Awesome Dryheads too but some of them are quite odd. Thinking maybe these folks got some that were surface collected before the fee dig as they look more weathered like surface finds would be. Not to depress you too much but all my trips to the Baker predated the Geode Kid when the Lindbergs just gave you a written map. Price was 15 cents per pound for all you could dig and we were real poor then so we threw out most all the big ones as most all were megacrystal quartz inside and a $1.50- $2.00 for a singe big t-egg was just too expensive. The eggs in the two to three inch range were the best ones and tended to have the best agate centers. I won't ask you what they charged for the tee pees and dryheads as those folks you are buying from are not inexpensive, that's for sure....Mel

Blizzard stone. Man that's why common names are confusing. One is definitely a gabbro and I read the other one from Wyoming might be a form of travertine. That one does look like lysite so I'm really not sure if the blizzard stone is the same stuff. Depends on if the latter is agate hard or not I guess......Mel

I've hunted Horse Canyon and the green moss from there tends to me more of the tube type, more complex than what you have there. To me yours looks more like Pacific Northwest material from Idaho. I'd say limb cast except the exterior does not look like wood. Might be a big ole nodule of Hog Canyon/ Hog Creek moss from near Weiser, Idaho. Sometimes they call those Idaho potatoes and a rock shop at Nampa, ID used to have some huge ones....Mel

Fascinating collection. Bob, were you able to get any background on the folks who accumulated such a museum worthy collection of natural history materials? That story, in itself, would seem to be hugely interesting as that is definitely a lifetime type collection and the folks who built it must really have a helluva back story....Mel

Oh good Lord! Can't say it hasn't happened to me and it is a horrible feeling. Got to a garage sale one time when a guy was just pulling out with a pickup load full of prize material. Nothing but junk left for old me.....Mel

Wonderful pics! Further question. Were the cuts wet ( water, oil) to bring out depth and detail when photographed or are all these polished cuts?....Mel
