Go bigger, you only spend the money once, the filler material is cheap and can be used many times ! The grit cost is a little more but if you skip one beer a vweek your budget wont change much !

I found a cheap used vibra sonic cleaning unit on E-_Bay, it will do an hour's worth of scrubbing in about 30 seconds . I use it for everything from fossils to metal detecting finds. It will float the gunk out of the tiniest crevices ! You can mix the solution used to match the job at hand , simply try a sample to see how it goes ! Using 50/50 toilet bowl cleaner / water will clean fossils quite well by removing the lime off the surface of a shell and exposing the actual shell with no apparent damage !

Grit source isn't like produce or furniture and cars, probably 1 or 2 sources world wide so just be happy you can get your paws on it !

I'd say too small of a load and yes splash up. Could you see water when you first loaded the bowl. You want wet not bathed, and it is critical to have sufficient material in the load (throw in those Fairburns if you need ballast). I don't know, but I can imagine that with too small of a load, the rocks were dancing enough to throw everything toward the top and it stuck. I always start my vibe 5 with the top off, and this lets me check the action and adjust the amount of stones, add a bit of water or ??. I also only add the grit after I have had the bowl running with a dose of dawn liquid (which I add to every stage). The soap helps the grit cling to the rock and eventually the foam cushions the movement. Thats the way things run here in New Mexico, not new and certainly not Mexico. I hope you figure it out. I let mine run for a couple minutes so the soap coats the stones well and then add grit SLOWLEY so it coats evenly and then use squirt bottle to add water until action returns to the same speed as before anything was added !

Faceting becomes a form of self hypnosis , you start out and begin to concentrate on what you are doing and soon you have become soo engrossed in what you are doing that time, space and surroundings are lost. The Navajo rug weavers get caught up in their weaving the same way. Before they finish a rug they intentionally make a mistake in the weave so their soul isn't trapped in the rug ! Thread art on the butt end of fishing rods can have the same effect, many nights I would grab a glass of ice water and go down in the basement to my shop and start working and then I would hear one of my roomies bumbling around in the kitchen upstairs. Taking a drink of water I would realize the water was room temperature . I had been sitting in front of my project for 8 hours straight ! An old friend of mine in the rock club here was into faceting and when he was in the zone you could walk into his shop and speak to him and not get any reaction what so ever, he was in his own special place !
Weird answer this was, escape from the real world you will !

Don't leave unattended longer than overnight ! There is a long list of nasty things that could happen including starting a fire from overheating . Not really a big chance of THAT happening but why risk anything or all you own for a hand full of rocks !
