If he does good today, he is on the fast path through the Primaries. He's got most of the attributes needed to win: 1) He is the best looking 2) He's got the most money 3) He's got attackdogs doing the heavy negative ads
Do we annoint him King Mitt?

I participated in a student show at Lexington Arts and Crafts Society yesterday. It was quite exciting; my work was on display and people were commenting and asking questions about my work. We were allowed to show two pieces; mine are in the lower left of the display; one is a sterling silver sunflower pendant with a Jasper center. The other is a Copper Ginko leaf pin with sterling accents. Charlie The show pieces on display: My wife and I at the show: Charlie

Who Wouldn't be happy there! Great Pictures! Great Country!
I think you also hit the nail on the head when you said, "They were happy, because they did not know they were poor."
It is much harder today, with all the advertising and increased awareness, to not be aware of what you don't have.

I picked up plenty of rocks as a child, but I wasn't hooked until I started tumbling rocks....I bought from other rockhounds and did the Christmas exchange here before I went out on my own.
A vacations for two weeks to the fourcorners...the first place to blow me away Pedernal Peak in New Mexico. Agates big enough to be bookends and more just laying in the dirt waiting for me to take them home. I was floored; I never knew I could find such things

Found this one on the Wall Street Journal website. It is a few years old so you may have already seen it...but it is still a good indicator of how well off you are - on a global basis. Link to your personal wealth standing: www.globalrichlist.com/This is the article in full blogs.wsj.com/wealth/2007/02/01/the-rich-o-meter/tab/print/They had another article about the record number of wealthy blogs.wsj.com/wealth/2011/06/22/u-s-has-record-number-of-millionaires/I applaud all those who have found happiness without wealth, truly wonderful and that is how we should all live our lives. I used to think that money didn't matter and that it didn't buy happiness; I still feel one should have no trouble being happy without wealth but at the same time I now realize how important money can be. For Example...If I want to live in Texas or Florida or Maine and go rockhounding in the Fairburn agate beds of South Dakota, It costs a bit of cash....and rockhounding in someone elses back yard does make me happy. I could be happy without the trip to South Dakota, but I think I am happier with it. If I didn't have the money to make the trip, I would not want to go there, so having the money makes me happy if I use it for that but I could have used it for something else that might have made me even happier (or not)...I am such a flip-flopper! Sandy Cline is a master Canadian Rock Carver. Googal him and I'm sure you will see some amazing sculpture. His rough is Soapstone, which is a relatively soft (talc-like) rock. Soapstone is often used in wood stoves and gas stoves. My wife took a class of Sandy's at William Holland in Young Harris, Ga and these are typical student works. Soapstone can be carved with woodworking tools or even your finger nails. Many people carve Opal (much harder than soapstone but less than Jasper and Agate) Charlie

We have met the enemy and it is us!
We all like to blame someone else, but we, as Americans, are the problem.
You can blame the Lawyers, but the lawsuits are brought by you and me. The juries that award outrageous settlements for hot coffee consist of you and me.
Some dumbass gets his kid shot up in a gun show and we want to blame the show.
Somebody drinks too much and we want to blame the bar.
Some Arab from Saudi Arabia named Osama based in Afghanistan or was it Pakistan attacks the USA and we want to blame Saddam Hussein and Iraq... Oh that was Bush, nevermind

Thumlers weakness...those damn lids. The twelve pounders wear through in the middle after a very short time. We reinforce the middle with ductape...doesn't last very long, then Rubber or rubber or epoxy reinforcement or plexiglas replacements...or we just keep buying more of them becuse it is a fairly good tumbler that we've invested a good chunk of cash into.
The 3 pound thumler lids do not seal very well and leak all over the place..I read recently that you can help the seal with vasoline!

Certainly a subjective idea, "RICH". To most people, rich is having much more than they themselves have...sounds very subjective.
But $250,000 was chosen because it is so much more than most people make every year and most people could live the good life on a quarter of a million a year; La Dolce Vita! Taking a very high number means that very few people can honestly disagree with the definition.
I imagine it was first chosen because it was the upper one percent who made this much a year when the definition was introduced. As the rich get richer, the definition will get some tweaking but I doubt most people can fathom the kind of living the upper one or two percent have in this country charlie

And there certainly is no handbook of absolutes when raising children.
You do your best and that is all you can do. Yopu live in the moment...and then it passes. You hope you are right about the important things but, at some point, you have to realize they have to live their own lives (and make their own mistakes). Some people will never grow up no matter what you do. Other respond the way we planned. You cannot control everything so enjoy the things you have an effect on...and try to have a positive effect on everything.

I read that yesterday morning and was thinking...california does it again, however, the most incredible part of it, if I remember correctly, is that California is the 30th state to choose the 4'9" requirement!

This is true...The first time I went away for a weekend without parental supervision was a weekend after I graduated High school. So ... converting that to the twenty first century... and the way people talk about how kids are babied so much today, you should wait until he graduates college before letting him go!!!!! ;D Charlie

It does seem like food has gone up mightily in price over the past couple of years, but... Consumer Price Index - November 2011 The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) was unchanged in November on a seasonally adjusted basis, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 3.4 percent before seasonal adjustment. The energy index declined for the second month in a row and offset increases in the indexes for food and all items less food and energy. As in October, the gasoline index fell sharply and the index for household energy declined as well. The food index rose slightly in November, though the index for food at home declined as four of the six major grocery store food group indexes fell. The index for all items less food and energy increased 0.2 percent in November following increases of 0.1 percent in each of the prior two months. The indexes for shelter, medical care, apparel, and personal care all rose. These increases more than offset declines in the indexes for new vehicles and used cars and trucks. The all items index has risen 3.4 percent over the last 12 months. This is a slightly smaller increase than last month's 3.5 percent figure, as the 12-month change in the energy index declined from 14.2 percent to 12.4 percent. The 12-month change in the food index also declined slightly, from 4.7 percent to 4.6 percent. In contrast, the 12-month change in the index for all items less food and energy continued to rise, reaching 2.2 percent in November. www.bls.gov/news.release/cpi.nr0.htm

Greg, Unless I missed it, you did not say how you would polish your river rocks, only that you did not have a tumbler but might consider one. A tumbler is the only way you will be able to do a whole batch of rocks that are not already ready (smooth to 600 grit wheel equivalent) for polish.
If you don't have a buffing wheel or polisher, I assume you might want to try a few by hand first. In my experience the least frustrating method of hand polishing rocks, you can polish (to a soft luster) rocks that already well smoothed. My best attempts have been using 3M polishing paper; they come in six different grits from 400-6000 and can be used wet or dry. This works very well on relatively softer rocks like septarian nodules; I have not attempted verd hard agate and quartz. If you have very hard rocks you might want to start with some wet/dry sandpaper from 300-600 grit before the polishing paper.

I was (almost) sorry to see the Patriots win again. Tebow had a great start and a decent game. If his teammates didn't cough the ball up so many times it would have been a very different outcome. But the better team usually finds a way to win even when they are being outplayed.
