Drove 9 hrs to meet up with Condor and Blarney at the Ranch. Hunted for about 9 hours and then drove 9 hrs home. Fun but not recommended. :PS Arrived later than expected. WOW. The ranch was green! Met Gil then Dan Set up Camp Went rock hunting. In between we drank Guinness. That's all she wrote! I just had to show you this one...a little nodule which contains orbicular, banded fortification and red plume all in one. I was amazed when I washed it off...one for the specimen collection, I guess. Back, orbicular WWR agate (very rare) Front Banded, plume, orbicular all in one nodule Closer I love it! Rivals your red/black biscuit, Mr McGuire! ;)S

Sure was fun to meet up with you guys out there. One of the highlights for me was when Fergie let me pick her up and hold her. She's my buddy.

Great to see you both, Susan and Gil. Hope to see you both again in March!
OK... Jan gave me the rates for the cabins and camp grounds. The small cabin is almost finished.... The sheet rock is up and they were installing the water lines when we were there last weekend. It's looking good.
Here are the rates:
Large Cabin: $150.00/day Includes a kitchen w/working stove, Bathroom & shower w/hot water. Sleeps 10 or 11 if 2 people double up in a bed... woo hoo!
Small Cabin: $100.00/day (is right next to the big cabin) Includes bathroom w/shower (I think) and a washer and dryer. Sleeps 4.
Campsites around the cabin (if the cabin is rented): $20.00/day
Jan told me that individual camping around the cabins in tents is no longer allowed unless you are with the party that is renting the cabin(s).
Campsites in the RV area: $25.00/day Includes electricity and bathroom/shower access.
Collected rock is still $2.00/lb
So... those are the rates.... with all the "perks" that go along with being in our "trusted" group.
Now.... since the trip is scheduled for Spring break which is the busiest time of the year for the ranch, Jan told me that it's first come first served. Whoever pays cash for the cabin first will get it. She will require that the rental is paid in full... in advance...

Has anyone ever hunted on the east side of the road ( across the road from where the cabins are ) ? Jan mentioned that the ranch extended across the road . I have also seen pictures fo nice fortification from the east side across the road. One guy has posted a lot of pictures on flickr ( dardilrocks ) and he mentions that he found a lot on the east side , but 20 and 30 years ago . Just wondering about places on the ranch that folks may have collected at . Thanks for any replies . Rodney

Two years ago we hunted almost exclusively on the East side. There was rock everywhere - just laying around. I haven't been back since then, but it was terrific then. Found some great moss, some great fortification, and some other really neat finds.

Were these big peices ? Or I should say , bigger than the small biscuits on the west side ? I was there about a month ago and found lots of biscuits , some even fist sized . But I only found one piece of agate that was fist sized and not the biscuit type . Trey saw this and swears it's plume all the way thru . I covered a lot of ground in 2 days , but know there was a lot to the ranch that I didnt see . You can click the link to see a report about my trip . The thread turned into 3 pages , and there are great pictures on every page . The link : dirtyrockhounds.proboards19.com/index.cgi?board=minetalk&action=display&thread=4164&page=1

All of the pieces I brought home were generally bigger than the typical small biscuit. We actually didn't hunt biscuits very much that trip. We were kicking ourselves afterward! My largest find was probably football sized, and once you get rid of the basalt, the agate band goes to about 4" in size. Let me see if I can dig up the photos from the first trip. Here you go: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?board=Pictures&action=display&thread=12463&page=1It went a little long.

The east side is off limits to the public! Trey only permits rockhounds that he knows well to hunt over there.

Hi, I'm interested in going. It would be a first for me. I'm not a camping kind of gal, so I'd like to stay in one of the cabins. Is there anyone organizing the trip or keeping track of the numbers? I may make it a real adventure and drive from the East Coast. Is there anyone along the way that would like to join me? Grace

I guess the planning falls to me... so... Just got off the phone with Jan... I booked the large cabin for March 14th - 22nd and Kim (RockyRacoon) will be booking the small cabin for her, a friend and three kids. Large Cabin - sleeps 7 with 4 of the spots already taken. It has one queen size bed with 5 twins so someone will have to double up.... I think there is a couple planning to attend so the queen is spoken for. Tenting around the cabin is allowed for $25.00 per night only if you are with our group. Cost per night is $150.00 split between those in the cabin. The cost per person will be tallied up when we know how many are planning to come and how many nights. RV sites are available. Please contact the Woodwards for information. Jan & Trey Woodward 432-364-2271 paradiseranch5@hotmail.com Also, there is a small 2 bedroom trailer that may be available w/1 double bed and 1 or 2 twin beds. Please conatct me for details. The trip is scheduled for the week of March 14 - 22. All are welcome to join us. Folks planning to attend so far: Silverlass and Mailman - RV NMRocks (WickedWire) and possibly another Cabin or tent Akansan - Cabin Blarneystone - Cabin RockyRacoon - Kim and friend with 3 great kids Gil (Condor) Please contact me via PM or e-mail if you would like to join us. blarneystone.rocks@comcast.net Hope to see lots of folks there... should be a great time! Hey Roxy - No worries.... the ranch is located in far West Tx. just North of the Big Bend. Probably more 'native' folks in the area than cowboys but there's a few cowboys there for sure... Trey Woodward (photo by WyckedWyre) (photo by WyckedWyre) There are 2 cabins on the W. side of the ranch. The smaller cabin is already full and the larger cabin will sleep 7. There is a 2 bedroom trailer that may be available by the time March rolls around... it has 1 double bed and one or 2 singles but might sleep more than 3. Tenting is allowed in the same area that the cabins are located in and costs $25.00 per night up per tent w/up to two people. Here's the Web Site: www.woodwardranch.net/I'll have to do some searching for the threads from the previous trips. Let me know if you need any more info.... Dan
