Steve, it can be found along the California coastline. 15-20 million years ago during the Miocene epoch, the land we are on now had already taken shape. The assumption is that it is whale bone but there were other marine mammals swimming around so, it could be dolphin or porpoise.
The prime collecting locations are the Santa Barbara county coastline where it erodes from the cliff-sides. I actually got this piece when I bought a flat-rate box of "grandpas" rock collection that was found in their garage.
