Valentine's Day is when most people here plant their potatoes, give or take a few days,so spring planting is beginning. No comfort for those snowed in,I know.Feel for you.

I have been going to sleep early Snuffy. First week of getting the plant business going. Hibernation got the best of me. When are you going to crank up the matar plants? As soon as Lowes and Home Depot get the 6-packs of them in.They always sucker in gardeners with individual larger plants for 3 or 4 bucks each at first.A couple weeks later the 6 packs come. Those 2 stores are the only sure places I can get the varieties I want.Small nurseries I gave up on,never know what you gettin'.Stick a popular tag on any cheap seed they have on hand.Believe me,forty years of this ,hard to pull the wool over my eyes on the maters! snuffy

Well Snuffy, if things get really bad it's nice to know you have an emergency food source People do eat Helixes but they should be put into a pen for a few days with cornmeal, I think, to purge them of any poisons they may have been exposed to. I guess I'd eat them if there was nothing else, but escargot are very near the bottom of my voluntary food choices. I also am a schneckenleibhaber (snail-lover). I have collected escargot from many yards for a free and delish meal. I feed cornmeal as required, it fills their alimentary canal and clears out the poo. I don't think it's digestible by snails so it doesn't become poo. I don't eat poo, de-vein your shrimps folks! boil quickly just to kill, cool, de-shell them, sautee in seasoned/spiced butter and eat with white rice. Yummy! Maybe I should plant some agapanthus and get my own farm going again! If the snails I have were that big, wouldnt have a problem finding them! snuffy

I have a constant battle with those slimy rascals! All my pet wood piles are excellent habitat for them, always picking them in my garden. Guess I keep replenishing the population with all the bags of leaves I haul in every year!Oh well, could have bigger problems!Dont believe I'll be dining on them however.

That's a lot of wire fence! Must be a rough neighbourhood. Need to keep the neighbours out? Don't mind me. I'm just jealous looking at my garden under 3 feet of snow. Darryl. Lol! The cows would love to eat my veggies! snuffy

Connived with the wife to let me move her hoarded stuff and let me make a man cave in the basement close to where the wood stove is. I built the walls 25 years ago out of 7 fallen appalachian style chimneys i carried in from the 2500 acres behind the house. Got heat, peace and a refridge, heavenly. About to go medieval on those wood shelves and remove them into kindling. The Man Cave. ugggg I need to go there and chisel out some bricks for my collection!! snuffy

James, its about time you get yourself an electron-microscope or at least something that you can connect to a computer (for our benefit ). There sure is a whole world of things in your corals. Not just this one, but a lot of others too. That would do the budget in many times over Kurt. Got a lot of fossil stuff around here. The coral beds are even limited compared to some areas. All very interesting. Some of James's coral, from my $60 rig!! snuffy

Awesome garden Snuffy. Giant too. You must have some energy. Nice and neat helps a lot. I forgot to ask you about the live oaks. Are you in the part of TX where they grow? Was it 2 years ago you had that deadly drought? I drove thru from Zapata and it was depressing to see so many dead live oaks that were 100-300 years old. Like 50% in one county. James, the area I live in is the Post Oak belt.Lost some of those, lots of water oaks, lots of pin oaks, and most piss elms.Havent seen a dead Live Oak yet that I can recall, most were planted around homes and streets, these weren't native to here I dont think..Tough trees!Got 4 in my yard. Many are grown here. I get my exercise out there.Dont till, all done with spading fork, grubbing hoe and shovel, carry all the dirt around in 5 gal.buckets.Trying to make it easier to handle when I'm older!Only going on 65 now! snuffy

It's hard to get in the gardening mood with a foot of snow on the ground. I just got in from blowing the driveway. I do share your love of OPBL (Other People's Bagged Leaves) though. I like them so much that I made a video a few years ago. Love it!!! snuffy

I haven't done much posting on here lately.Sad to say I haven't touched a rock in almost 2 months.devoting my time to adding on to my garden,my main hobby. This is my 40th garden season coming up.Thanks to Scott I now have plums and peaches added. This part added this week.I will develop it this year. End view, some of the over 250 bags of leaves I've hauled out of town this winter Part added a couple months ago. The biggest job will be keeping it all watered during a drouth. Thanks for looking, hope it will get some of you in a gardening mood! snuffy

I never knew there were so many different kinds of bricks. I used to think a brick was a brick. I'm not going to cut up my three new bricks with the words on them, now that I know their histories. They will be added to our brick path system. I appreciate all the information. One of the most unusual bricks I've seen has "Don't spit on sidewalk" stamped on it.They placed one every so often when the sidewalks were brick,a health campaign during a tuberculosis outbreak.A lady in town we did a job for had one. snuffy
