Clean up both sides so they are flat, if not already, and then into the vibe! It'll leave the rind but put a polish on it all except the druzy.

I see some other folks think and drink like me. I really enjoy visiting any and all micro-breweries. I hate canned beer of any kind. Bottle will do, but only if I can't find a tap. No IPA's for me. Too hoppy and bitter tasting for me. Light, amber, scotch ales, and darks are all good! Some of my fav are: Moose Drool, Mountain Man, Kilt Lifter, and of course Guinness. I love the fact that the micro-breweries are going up faster than our taxes!

Plain on the outside? Either cut it or do some mega-grinding and then into the tumbler. I have always found a better rock hiding inside.

I did not think it was possible to get a wet-polish on a Petosky in a tumbler...just shows exactly how much I know!

I really like the Burro Creek and that particular cab shape just adds to the overall beauty. Thanks for sharing.

I like each and every one, but your Christmas cab is my favorite. I have to be honest, I see a Christmas ornament. You have given me a wonderful idea! A new, and special, long and slim cab to hang on the tree each year!

WOWWWZERS to you for the great luck in your blade placement. That is truly a specimen that needs to be saved. If it means "as is", so be it. The polishing would be extra cool, but not at the possible chance you could harm or destroy the crystals. Keep us posted of you decide to polish the cut surfaces.

Beautiful stones and work. I am glad that I am not required to name my favorite, as it just couldn't happen with that wonderful selection of cabs. Thanks so much for sharing!

They all deserve a WOWWWZERS! The shine, the variety of hardness and material all add to the total package. I see no sense in you even trying to improve your polishing techniques. It can't be done!

rockjunquie - I always drill after I cut the rough shape with the trim saw and before I start grinding the preform. If the stone cleaves or fractures, I want it to happen before I spend any real time on it. I don't use tumblers or vibes anywhere in my cabbing so I don't need to worry about a stone breaking that way. After I drill; I grind the preform to shape and make any adjustments needed if I missed my mark for the hole. Next I grind bottom of the cab to prep it for polishing. After the bottom is prepped I start grinding the cab dome and girdle. If it doesn't break in the first three steps, it probably won't break at all. I was thinking along the same lines. I ordered some diamond bits and will give it a shot after I get them. I'll post them when I get them done. I was thinking it would be way easier to drill a hole on a flat surface like the preform. The other factor to consider is that a polished cab will have a very slick surface...making the start of your drill hole difficult at best. It is still a good idea to start your hole in the unpolished cab with a burr to give the diamond bit a place to get a bite into the stone. Otherwise the bit wants to skate all around.

I love the agates. They certainly have some wonderful banding as well as crystal formations. What are you going to do with them now? I really don't know. There are some small ones I think I will tumble. The rest maybe just keep as is? Or maybe get someone to cab one for me? What would you do? Hi Ali, Well I would most likely do exactly what you have in mind. Tumble the smaller agates and save the larger ones as specimens. I do some cab work, but most of my rocks, time and effort go into tumbling. I might try and smooth the broken surfaces of one of the banded agates on my flat-lap if they were not too bad, and then tumble them "IF" I could squeeze them through the top of my Loto vibe. No matter what you decide, they will always be wonderful, and maybe time will let you come up with a satisfying project.
