this shows the transition from the native rock to white quartz to smokey Attachments:

the inclusions are probably chromium and a lot softer than the rest of it, the scratch and SG will give you a good idea; wish you'd said what they were. the colour and translucency is good for jade or one of its neighbours.

it's the black quartz under the snowcap in the picture, it's definately quartz that somehow got coloured smokey, in that pocket and a little bit of veining leading away from it

Go to the section here on RTH on wire wrapping and look at the methods people have volunteered; maybe you can adapt one

a lot of tmes you'll get irridescing or rainbowing along fracture lines. I don't know if this is what you are getting but if it runs along them then it probably is

I know this pic doesn't show up that well but I found some vein quartz that has a pocket of black in it. The matrix is some kind of metamorphic with a vein of white quartz over it about 2 inches thick but in the one spot is this black quartz pocket with some tendrils that stretch out into the surrounding white quartz. The colours have a sharp definition between them also; no blending. Considering that smokey quartz is formed from the material being bombarded by radiation; and if this was formed somehow else, it is totally bizarre to me how this occurred. any guesses or info on this including idle speculation is fine ;D Lloyd Attachments:

I got my sample of Blue G, from H2Mouth mining today and it is a beaut; Thank you very much for the opportunity to try this out, Kris and Al. I took a picture of it with a cab of my local unnamed serpentine on top for size. The cab is 1 3/4 in x 1 1/4 in so if I slab or carve the nobby; there is going to be a lot to work with as it weighs close to .571gms. I haven't done an SG on it yet but It diffinately feels in the 3 area. Attachments:

compromise; put a glass top on the whole thing so they woin't spill their milk in the carving and throw some cushions on the stools. And maybe raise it up about 10 inches :<)

when you can afford it is right; any size peice of the real ice is going to make you wish you had more money; I was going to say another word but humour doesn't allways translate. It sure would be better to work than the quartz and other materials that they are trying to pass off as ice.

by using a vacuum you can get the epoxy to penetrate if it is thin enough to fill fractures but getting it into the "pores" is not a problem methinks. most epoxy are too thick, and hydrophane I don't think means it will neccessarily pull in other materials.

I don't know how large it is but I cut and polish on my 5 inch diamond pads the same as Wampidy uses and have done 3 inch diameter

In wood working they would be called I think a parting or incising, or scoring tool and are used to cut through the material as it is turning to create a nice fine cut through. You could use it to mark fine lines but the main purpose would be to cut through the clay as it is turning.
