Nice tumble and you get extra points for self hounded. I like those Montana state line ones. Thanks for posting. Chuck Thanks, I'll take any extra points I can get. Once things dry up a little in the spring we'll head back up the hill to get some more of that stuff in Montana. There is some other rock in that general area we need to check out too, found just enough last summer to know it's there. Russ

The old propane tank tumbler-yep, still using it. It's shut down for the winter now, just running the three little tumblers in my heated "stupid room". Actually wore out the first tank and had to make another one, but heck that only takes a few minutes. Made a couple of changes, besides the propane tank that unit is also running two barrels made from 6" pvc with more room for expansion. The smaller barrels were easier for me to deal with after my surgery last winter. Kind of a cobbled up mess for now, but it works. I'll re-do it all when we get back from Quartzsite and get it going again. Have enough "rough tumbled" stuff now to get through the winter. Russ I have settled on 6 inch(sch 40) PVC. Barrels 18 to 34 inches long. Heavy enough. I would think that that larger diameter propane tank would flat out grind some rocks with so much pressure. Looks like I will get 3-5 years out of the PVC barrels. They cost about $65 to make which I consider cheap even if they only lasted 2 years. They actually last longer if you run them faster at 40-50 RPM. my experience is slower causes more slippage of the rocks climbing the barrel. I use them for coarse grind only and use 30 or 46 grit and very sharp stones. Hammer broken coral is like razors. After the first few days of fresh hammer broken coral the inside of the barrel is rough. Deeper scratches from the sharp rocks. I think sharp rocks wear on the barrel more than any grit. Part of the beauty of the propane tank barrel is that it is so cheap to replace. And yeah, with all that weight it does grind the rocks down. I need to try the 30 grit this year, been running the 46/70. My 6 inch pvc barrels are 16 inches long and I've been spinning them about 35 rpm if I remember right, stole that idea from you. The propane tank gets first shot at the rocks, then from there they move on to the pvc barrels. Rough grind is what takes the longest so that's where I've concentrated my capacity. Running the hammer broken agates/jaspers dry in that big steel barrel for 4-5 days knocks the rind off and knocks off a lot of the sharp edges pretty good, gives it a head start before adding grit. Kind of loud, probably wouldn't want it in an attached garage. Russ

The rock in pic #6.. I have one exactly like that, I put it in my tumbler and it failed. What rock is that? That rock is Sam. Sam the rock. Just a chunk of agate I picked up over at what I call the R #1 site. Interesting place, and I need to do a lot more poking around over there come green up. Russ
