dehcpa Yes, these folks are all just regular folks with hobby equipment in their sheds, basements and garages. They are patient and passionate. They/we are all avid experimenters and look for better results. "Better" being defined by each individual. Some try to speed the process. Some go for ultimate polish. All are here for one reason. Fun. It is a bunch of fun! And very rewarding. Read here, a lot. In the couple rock tumbling subforums. Follow guys like jamesp , Drummond Island Rocks and Jugglerguy whom all share their techniques, experiments and knowledge freely. Introduce yourself in the new guy forum, hang around and get to know us. A lot of really good people here. I know many of them personally from my travels. I vouch for them for sure!

Wow! What a list of what not to get! Very true. I worked at Trimble inc. for years and our marketing manager said bad news travels 10x faster than good news. If you ask someone, "I need to buy a drill, what one is the best one to buy? He will probably tell you what not to buy because....(leaks, squeaks, smokes ) So, don't release a product till it's ready.

Your getting some good ideas but you have already learned a lot yourself. Get the kids interested and the adults will come with the money.

Being a Ohioian and flint is our gemstone( and that means nothing) but ... Flint is Waxy, has sharp edges, a file slides right off. I do see some flint (dark, light brown) but some of the rocks are rough looking that's definitely is not flint. That's my best guess with the pics available.

Good to know that about borax. I have a box here just waiting to be used. It killed the creeping Charlie in my yard and know it will be used for rock tumbling. Nice to know.

My number one trick is to leave the rocks in the first stage until they're done. That's a tough trick to master. Good to know because I have always thought the rocks (shape) would get to be good after all the other stages are done. That could be why, at the end of my tumble I have so much scrap.

About the dog food slurry and all slurry, I use it to fill the crack channels in my driveway but only until the bottom of the crack or separation line.

And that is very true about failures but.... I knew it was going to fail, just like everyone else. But... It made people laugh, so I won. But in the end... Don't use dog food. LOL

Well, you guessed it. It stunk real bad when I opened it up. It did nothing at all. I mean nothing. My dogs got mad because I took there food. I didn't post anything because it didn't work. If nothing is posted I always take that as a... Don't try that. If it did work, you bet I would tell everybody.

I am and will always be in the learning mode for rock tumbling. Someone posted once about using kitty litter to help make a good slurry. And yes it does. I learned that and I'm sure many others learned too. And the list goes on... For different things that are not documented in the tumbling procedure. So, I'm asking for what are your tricks (normally not listed) to improve tumbles.
A learning thread for tumblers new and experienced.

Yes, marshmellows, gram crackers, and chocolate. Good s'mores. And maybe even so good colored rocks, if your lucky. But even if you not lucky, what did you lose...nothing, nothing at all...say it again. War....
Oh, also... Some cold beer. Makes a bad day/night...good.

My nephew bought a bag of dirt at one of those find a gem places. He found a piece of clear Quartz and one of the people said it was Aqua ( something) but it was clear. They took it and heated it up to 500 degrees C for 4 hours. The quartz turned into a blue color. And JanesP posted about heat treating rocks. So this is a try to make something out of nothing. If you never try anything ... Then you will always lose. What's it cost to try?

[ IMG]http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160701/1483a4db2ff43683cf6eba37403d8a6b.jpg[/IMG] James posted about heating rocks. So now whenever I have a fire I put my rocks in a cast iron bowl and in the fire it goes. By the time the fire starts and when it goes out its been in the fire about 5+ hours. The rocks that are my base has seen heat for months. I have no pics of the end result yet because I can't tumbled or cut any yet, but real soon. Some of the base rocks in the 2nd pic, the rocks are dark red. You can see those. I did have a piece of Quartz I cut about 1x1x3 and it turned a solid white color. I will post all the rocks after they cool and I can touch them. Oh, the bottle caps you see are from liquid refreshments.

Water snakes...nice Around this time of year at Lake Erie the water snakes are all over the place. One of my buddies hooked one that was trying to get in the boat. About 5 feet long No toads in the belly but was trying to get a fisherman. A bait store has a photo of it.

Well as far as blocking someone. I bought something off eBay years ago. The description and photo were good but when I received it, it had a number engraved on the base.(clearly visible ) when I tried to contact him, he canceled his seller status. Other products that he had for sale started showing up. Did he change his login name and everything else? Don't know...but if your dishonest one way, you can be other ways too. I haven't bought from eBay since, and won't.
