Tell me about your lighting, please. Or, if it's not too much of a hassle, maybe you could post a photo of your camera / tripod / lighting setup? If you have already discussed in another thread, just point in that direction. Also, feel free to answer any of these questions if you've got time. Do you use a focusing rail? Or just a tripod? Can't imagine these are hand held. Manual f stop / shutter speed mode? Up around f10 or f11? Lowest ISO available on your camera, I assume? Custom contrast / saturation / sharpness settings in camera? Shot raw and post-processed, or do you let the camera process them? I have a few Canon DSLRs, including whatever the semi-pro full frame version was that came out around 3-4 years ago, 5D Mark IV, I think, and a few oldie-but-goodie crop frame models. The best photographs I have taken were done 15+ years ago on the original Canon digital rebel with cheap canon prime lenses. Good subject matter / composition / lighting and a sharp lens is all you need for great photos from any Canon DSLR make in the past 20 years. Performance (auto-focus speed, for example) has improved a lot on newer models, but unless you're taking 100% crops and blowing them up for wall art, any Canon DSRL made in the past 20 years takes great photos. And I've got a couple of older Canon prime macro lenses, including a 180mm f3.5 insect lens (the 180mm focal length lets you focus in on little critters without getting 1/2" from their face and scaring them off). Holding a 180mm lens steady when stopped down to f9-f16 is the only problem out in the field... A powerful flash helps. I want to set up a little rock photo studio using my neglected photo equipment. Shouldn't be a big deal, but lighting is the one issue I'm not sure about. You manage good illumination without glare. I am interested in how you achieve that with such highly polished rocks. Jonathan, first let me say, I love your profile pic. I was looking through old posts and came across your thread that had the cat investigating the rock. Nice shot. I am a little short on time right now, have to clear some snow and ice, but I will direct you to a thread where I discussed my lighting setup and backgrounds a little bit. The discussion on photography starts on the second page of the November tumbles thread. One other unusual background that I get a kick out of:
Makes for a nice 'clean' surface.
See if that can hold you over for a little bit and I'll get back on later to answer some of your other questions. You should be able to click on any of my images in the post and go straight to that image on my Flickr page. You can look at the EXIF data for any photo and see my camera, lens, ISO, aperture, etc. You can gather a lot of info there and see if that helps, or creates new questions.

I'm going to have to listen a time or two, Tela. It's going to have to grow on me, but it got in my ear. It reminds me of another band from the same era, with a similar sound:

The great Miracle Whip debate aside , the technology to bring these amazing natural phenomenon into focus, so to speak, for us is pretty amazing, too.

Four months - yeah, right.
Oh, wait - yeah, you're right!
Robin reminded me of that after my earlier post. Just seems like longer. You're cutting like you've been at it longer than a few months.
Truth. (From a casual observer)

Oops, left out one of my favorites. I know where THAT came from. I'm still amazed that it's Lavic, and I still hope that another one pops up in my bucket. Nice to see you back. Thanks, Dave. I'm hoping you find a piece like that, too. I'll feel better about taking your unique find. I do love it.

I saw that many of the tumblers here use a Lot-O tumbler so I went and purchased the single barrel version, my problem is that the batches of rock that I have done in it I always have a pile of grit and media at the bottom of the tumbler. Is this normal? I have tried draining water through my fingers, used a strainer but nothing seems to work. The other question is, when do you all add the grit after you start the tumbler or pour it on the rocks before you plug in the tumbler? Any comments would be appreciated. I'm assuming you've been able to get the rocks to roll correctly in the Lot-O, but are just having trouble getting the right mixture of rocks/media/grit/water for consistent action? In other words, nothing mechanically wrong with the unit? This is one of the reasons I dropped a Sic stage from my Lot-O routine. I didn't want to try to walk the tightrope between too much water and everything dried out any more. You can rotary roll your first stage in Sic 80 and either roll them out a little longer than normal before switching to the Lot-O, or give them a quick Sic 220 run in the rotary before going in. Then, go to the Lot-O with AO 220. It is easier to work with in the Lot-O and is going to do the same thing as the Sic. I let this break down over about 4 days and then straight to the polish step. Less fuss, less grit to buy, same results...seems like a win to me.
