Tommy - Great play-by-play on your slab-venture! That Tahoma is beautiful. I've seen examples of that quality, but not for sale at shows. You always seem to have great material to work with. Do you feel like the Hxtal did its job, or were there some fractures it couldn't improve? Lynn

As you always do, another GREAT trip report! Interesting how much some of that material looks like Holt Canyon. It must have been formed in a very similar process. That's what I calla Bob Marley jasper. Lynn

Bluesky78987 - Susan, Thanks for the trip report. I appreciate you taking time & energy to document your trip. I usually get distracted by the agates & forget to take pictures. I can't wait to see what's on the inside of your finds. Lynn

I've never heard of Grape agate from this area called Stromatolites. They seem to form in blobs of highly silicated "grapes". Sometimes the grapes form as separate units, not attached to anything. They max out at about 1/4". There is no indication that they broke off from a host blob, but are whole grapes. They don't form in layers like the Stromatolites I've cut. Solo es mi opinion. Lynn

I had the opportunity to meet the author - Pat McMahan at the Pow Wow at Quartzite. What a nice guy. He invited me to his house/shop if I ever visit Cottowood, AZ where he lives. He has a great attitude about finding agates. He's a plume agate addict. He can go to a location where plumes have not been found previously, and find them. Or to locations where "the good stuff has all been found" & find the good stuff again. He has 9 claims, and finds plume agate at most of them.
At the end of the Pow Wow, which is the only show he does each year, he sells all of his remaining material as a lot to a single buyer. Not everything he owns, but the finds from the year. Then he starts over the next year. Lynn

vegasjames - Nice haul! Our local club went there from Feb 28 - Mar 3. We took the Burro Creek Crossing road to where it crosses Burro Creek, but there was too much water to cross. Were you able to cross that? We found some botryiodal chalcedony on Signal Rd, which is the name of Burro Creek Crossing Rd on the West side of Hwy 93. When broken open, some had purple interiors. I can't wait to see tour closeup pix. Lynn

It does look like Willow Creek. Picture jasper is just a generic term that applies to lots of jaspers. Lynn

Looks good! I like how you used silver sheet in between wires on the perimeter. Never seen that treatment before. Lynn

Looks like Graveyard Point Plume from Idaho. It's unusual to see the botryiodal vug. Lynn

It seems that everything I cut makes red mud. I just cut it anyway, enjoy it, & live with the mess. That's life in the lapidary lane!

I collect grape agate from the same location - San Rafael Swell near Green River, Utah. I mostly like the exterior for its botryoidal textures. Sometimes I slice off a section with cool grapes (not to be confused with cool beans!) flatten the back & set it in silver. Scroll part way down this page & see some examples of what I did with it: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/84561/overload-brenda-indian-blanket-canyonLynn

jason12x12 - nice HP machine. I'm sure someone out there will buy it. Facebook has a Lapidary Equipment group. It gets lots of exposure. Lynn

Those are very cool pieces. They have so much character! Beautiful. I bought a few rocks in a lot on ebay and one was a nice chunk of petrified wood. It's actually opalized, which it didn't mention in the listing, so -- bonus! I don't see any fire in the area that's exposed (the outside is bark)so there probably isn't any, and I'd hate to have it cut up to find out. It's a very solid piece. There is a lot of opalized pet wood, but it's usually common opal, no fire. You can identify it by its glassy look. The opalized parts are lighter in weight & softer than usual. Lynn

vegasjames - The link takes me to a website. I was hoping for a pdf as in the link name. Lynn OK, found how to access it again. Copy the title GUIDE TO PROSPECTING AND ROCK HUNTING IN WYOMING Then when you click on the link and get the website click on the WSGS Publication Search and paste in the name. This will provide the link to the article then click on the free download link.
Got it! Thanks to you & Jean. Lynn
