choochoorocks It's an orbicular jasper. Not sure I'd call it Poppy, though. I found 2 pieces very similar to yours at Lands End in San Francisco at the beach that's accessible from that trail. Lynn

I have found them by the case at the Habitat for Humanity Restore. Final cost was about .25 per bulb. I use 100 w bulbs in a lamp to heat up slabs & preforms to apply Hxtal epoxy resin. Lynn

Thanks all for the tips. Most of the vendors on Amazon are selling the same product under various names. I guess I'll take a gamble & see if I get a good one. Thanks herb for the cleaning tips. Lynn

A few years ago, my son and I took a trip to California's Central Coast. We spent three days at Morro Bay, with little to find and no rock-hounding allowed (and a very barren campground) on a non-dog-friendly. just to the north, however (a ten minute walk) is dog-friendly Cayucos Beach with some very pretty jaspers. We were there in the summer, so we found pebbles. I'm told in the winter, I'm told that large pieces of Cayucos jasper (very similar to Stone canyon jasper) can be found. It is rock-hound friendly, and the town has a rock show annually. Enjoy, -Stephan Stephan, I found this old post while researching Cayucos jasper. I've collected similar jasper north of Cambria. I'm planning a trip from Utah to CA soon. I'll be taking Hwy 46 to Cambria & then I will go south to Cayucos. So I don't have to walk the entire beach, is there a spot you'd recommend to find the jasper?
BTW, your flickr links are dead. Lynn

I have seen people talk about using a textile spot cleaning gun to clean specimens, etc. I'm in the market for one & am seeking recommendations on brands, vendors, etc. I've seen prices ranging from $60 - $220. I'm pretty thrifty, but don't want to buy junk.
TIA Lynn

Does anyone have a copy/photo of the color chart Mo Han uses for diamond wheels? I have a pink belt (not in Karate!) and am trying to identify it. I'd also like to ID all of the colors/grits.

stardiamond The 3 preforms on the bottom row look like Indian Blanket jasper from South Western Utah. Google it. I cut lots of it since it's local to me. I've never heard of Jellybean. Lynn

I'll be in Mesa for a few hours Sat evening & Sunday morning. Then I drive back to Cedar City, UT. I'd like the trip to be about more than just driving!
I can spare 1-3 hours. I'll be driving home via Kingman & Las Vegas
Any good agate hunting? Sightseeing around the Phoenix valley?
TIA Lynn

It doesn't take much to put a smile on my face, but an agate field sound like it might easily do it! I have looked into my crystal ball and I foresee some Cosmo agate in your near future Lordy, this makes me want to plan another trip to Utah Tommy, Those are great examples of Cedar City agate. You're a real rock hound dog! You seem to find the good stuff wherever you hound. Lynn Edit -I thought by quoting you, we'd see your pix in my quote. Not so.

Quick question... what type of 4x4 need is there? Would a little Jeep Compass work or would it need more clearance and substantial 4wd system? LOL, 1dave I have been working on my hand dexterity as a mechanic for the last 25 years, I'll take the mitten challenge... do I still get my hammer? Win , thanks for the suggestion. We are currently looking for a second place to stay and trying to decide if we want to get to know one place or have the adventure of two places. Tommy , that cosmos agate looks awesome! Do you have a pic of that crystal ball? The Cedar City location can be accessed by almost any vehicle. The Jeep Compass should be fine. Lynn

stewdogg I live in Cedar City. I can direct you to an agate field that will put a smile on your face! You'll be like a kid in a candy store. Depending on the day and my schedule, I can take you there & show you where to look, or I may stay & hang out with you. I have another secret spot I may take you to if you're nice (& buy me lunch!). Sadly I will not be able to come this year. On Jan 4th I am going to undergo a total hip replacement. I will be out of commission for a while after that and can't go anywhere until the PT is over. You'll finally be totally hip! Lynn

Have a great time at Qz, and especially at Tony's potluck. Lynn

OK, In my Googling, I came across Flex Seal, a rubber paint. It's available in a spray can, which probably wouldn't be ideal since you have to mix the diamond into the paint before applying it to the wheel. I also comes in a 16 oz jar of liquid or goop for about $15. It takes 24-48 hrs to cure. I don't like that since it might droop while drying.
Does anyone have experience with it for re-coating wheels, or even other applications? Lynn

upliftcrazy I missed your post, and found it almost 3 years later. I've been re-coating soft wheels for about 10 years. I tried linear polyurethane at the suggestion of someone on RTH, but it was too hard & didn't expose the diamond well. I've been using Bob Smith Industries 30 min slow cure epoxy since then with better results, but still am not satisfied. I think I'd like to use something that's a bit rubbery, so it wears slowly and exposes the diamond. I'm not as technical as you, just a simple, frugal lapidary. I mix the epoxy on a sheet of glass & then mix in the diamond. I do 300, 600, 1200, & 3000. I use belts on 8" drums. I don't know what more I can contribute to the process, but I'd like to hear all of your (and other's) progress. Lynn

I've been re-coating diamond belts for about 10 years now. I'm mostly pleased with the results, but the epoxy makes a slick, hard surface compared to the slightly rubbery coating of commercial wheels. Has anyone tried adding pulverized rubber to the mix? Or something other than epoxy? Something with more flexibility? If so, I'd love to hear about your experience. Lynn
