I'm sure that it is possible to shape and polish rocks to a shine without using any grit at all.

Oh my goodness I used to drink 12 beers, every other day. I'm almost 64 now so It has slowed down a little bit. Now it's 9 beers, twice a week. When they let breweries operate here in Alabama, I switched to all Craft Beer. I even have an RTH pint glass.

Some of my worry now though is that I'll confuse my contest rocks with others. I used filler rock from my local river that is full of Brown Chert that is excessively hard, with a pleasant color but they don't have any character , just Plain Brown.
They are slow to grind down and easy to tell it apart from the Target rocks. The Contest Rocks have big color and texture differences, like they are from a Mix of rough.
I have a dual 6 Pound tumbler and I am currently rolling 2 batches of rocks that I want to keep clearly separated from any filler rocks. The other batch are rocks from my Christmas vacation in Yuma Arizona. Am using some Black Countertop material that I busted up for filler in that barrel.
My contest rocks looked Hard like Flint but after 2 weeks I have chosen a slower stage 1 grind.

The best polish you will get with fine SiC grit is a Hazy Shine

Wooferhound ... are you drunk, yet? That's a lot of beer. Y'all ain't any fun , I'm the only one drinking. Will have one more beer before I take my rocks and go home to party with my Rock Polishers. I bet I can mix the greatest cocktail in my Tumbler, and I can drink out of it too.
Grew a beard between the last 2 beers

I went to Yuma Arizona over Christmas and picked up a hand-full of rocks along the Colorado river while I was there. They are rolling and should be out of polish in a month. I'll be looking for them. I can't wait to see what variety you might have come up with. Perhaps you could separate the handful for a photo shot of their own so I can distinguish them from the rest of the batch.
Hey I did a cleanout today and pulled those Colorodo River rocks out of the pan and took a picture of them. We were in a Park on a public path along the river in Yuma Arizona. Only saw a a few rocks worth the pickin. They have been a rolling week in Stage 1 for a cleanup and are waiting for the next batch that I push through to polish.
Here they are pictured soaking wet . . .
In a coupla months I'll have a buncha Yuma rocks to show off polished . . .

I didn't clean them well enough after the polish stage, so there's white residue in all of the imperfections. This was almost a complete failure!
But , are you having Fun ?
Carry On . . .

Thanks Dave I will pick up a couple later in the year I am currently building a large DIY tumbler with 1" shafts. I have been looking for good DC options for the reasons you have. AC motors are just do darn inefficient, plus DC speed control is simple. Do you know of any good options? All I seem to find are these super high voltage industrial motors -- 180v dc and stuff like that. I would prefer to keep it down around 24v dc as I have a large (and efficient) DC power supply that can be adjusted from 20v-30v. Use the motor out of an old treadmill. Normally 90 VDC but they are strong at much lower voltages like 12 volts. I converted a Box Fan to DC using a treadmill motor, am running it off of the battery on Solar Power system so it gets a voltage between 15 & 21 volts and works great with a PWM speed control.
There are many other useful things that can be salvaged from a treadmill like Rods, Rollers, metal frame, Tough Matt, Lights and wheels. In fact I bet you could build a complete quality tumbler by just salvaging one old treadmill.

I have a Dual Barrel 6 pound tumbler with the same problem. I just tilt the tumbler in the direction that I want the barrels to drift to. Don't make it Level, make it work right.
