Conglomerate, just rock fragments sealed together. Looks almost like a hunk of eroded asphalt sealed road roadbed, which is essentially a man made conglomerate....Mel

Yep, green yellow and red chert, often brecciated too, is very common throughout the Franciscan Formation all up and down the Commiefornia coast. Many are called jasper but they are of marine origin so they are chert. One real gemmy green variety from up near Stone Canyon is called Boar Canyon or Hog Canyon Jasper and examples show up on the beaches now and then....Mel

Definitely a fossil agate. Maybe a crinoid column or chambers of a fossil gastropod.....Mel

Wow, you are such a great cabber! I've not seen any quite like your agate variety, though I have heard it termed Rosebud Agate. Both cabs are beautiful, but like you, I much prefer the light green background jasper type. To confuse the issue, there used to be ( extinct now?) an agate type from the South Cadys near Ludlow too called rosebud or rose agate. And there is a rhyolite type from Afton Canyon but without green. I went and forgot a sixty pound boulder of the Ludlow stuff in the garden when I moved to Texas. The Ludlow material is very pitty though and is best done as a doublet...Mel

Hmmm. I have some too and thought it was too soft to be garnet but then maybe my example has more zoisite and the slab is mixed hardness...Mel

If you do much fine grinding in a UV-10 bowl you will cut through the bowl bottom edges fairly fast. I never did coarse grind in the vibe. Those black shaving are your bowl being ground away. As some have stated, fresh ceramic will make the situation worse. That "picture jasper" does look more like the picture or scenic sandstone out of Utah. Can't remember for sure where it's from. African Queen/Kalihari Pictuure jasper looks similar but is harder and has finer grain but does not go past a satin finish in the tumble....Mel

Those Diablo winds bring out the firebugs in droves too but I also had heard it was electric lines sparking. We had a firebug up by our Commiefornia ranch one time that, when caught, turned out to be a part time volunteer firefighter that wanted the work hours. Some people huh?.....Mel

I too have had very good luck buying from the Rockshed and Riverbend. I use them mainly for exotic materials and have been very pleased with their quality though Riverbend material is usually not crushed so you have to saw it or break it up....Mel

The exterior is usually kind of pale and crusty looking. All I've had is vein material, not nodules and the greenish matrix that contains the red inclusions varies from light to dark greenish. Hardness/porosity seems to vary. Some is quite silicated and takes a nice polish and some just a high satin finish. I've seen some very pretty stones made of it but these days it only seems to show up in old collections...Mel

Yeah, that RoseBud Jasper/Rosebud Agate/ Rose Rock came from the Layton Ranch just inside Oklahoma from the Colorado/ New Mexico/Oklahoma three corners area. Old material and I haven't seen new stuff from there in years. To me, more of a rhyolite type material than a true agate or jasper. Point of info. Some maps I have show it as in New Mexico, some in Oklahoma. Think the ranch itself may be right on the border..Mel

I always tell my wife, "I aim to misbehave!" I wear my Serenity Valley Browncoats Tee and make decisions by flipping my Jayne Cobb challenge coin.! And she totally don't get it. I doubt she's ever seen a single episode of Firefly. Extreme sacrilege and un shiny!!! Don't know how I ever hitched up with a gal what don't like sci fi or fantasy shows or books. Yet, she always has her face buried in one if those godawful long haired dude covered stupidass heaving bosom romance novels. WTF is up with that anyway? ....Mel

Andrea, Sher was nice enough to send the recipe note for me. When we got Cherokee from a pet shop he was frankly a mess. Had more than a few vet visits and it probably took a year to get him healthy again. Sher has become quite adept at caring for a really really finicky bird and we have had him for many many, dare I say almost too many years now *L*. We've had multiple hookbills since we were first married and I believe he's tied with or surpassed our longest lived Amazon in terms of longevity and our bad hearing can attest to that. He is a noisy fellow!!!! Hope your little feller is happy and thrives....Mel

Avocados are toxic to hookbills! Do not feed them avocados! Do not feed them chocolate ( I know some folks try to), no onions, garlic, fatty foods, high sodium foods, Fruit seeds like peach pits, cherry pits, apples seeds. No dry beans.
Talked to the wife, Cherokee is her bird. She suggested feed your baby warm food, not hot, only warm. Same temp as his mama fed him. Dinner she feeds Cherokee is always warm and when it is cold he usually don't eat it well. Remember, he's still a baby so soft warm food are appealing. Right now he just needs to settle in so corn is OK if it keeps he fed. Wife says to not introduce him to too many new things at once but do it gradually. Maybe a little mashed banana mixed with the corn for starters.
I'll get the wife's warm cockatoo food recipe for you Cherokee thrives on it and keeps a very good weight and activity level....Mel

Wow, that purple agate is real uncommon now. Great find! I think your giant mossy piece could be Horse Canyon material. Your piece you think might be Owyhee looks more like Goldfield, NV Bullseye Agate to me ( actually a highly silicated rhyolite from the Goldfield Gem claims)....Mel
