Those are neat looking but watch it when they are wet OR frosty. Our neighbor put in a Granite walk that was made from pieces he got from a local counter top maker, it was a hoot watchin him go out to get the mail on frosty mornings !

Just now read an article on MSN home page stating that the powers that be in NYC , are going to mandate that there be less salt used in their food preparation there ! Probably have to take your own salt shaker with you when you go to MacDonalds huh !
Makes me wonder if using SALT in public places will be deemed a simple misdemeanor or a full blown felony ?
New York City hasn't enough problems to work on ?

From what I picked up reading, one out of five explosive rounds failed to detonate when they were supposed to. From the million's of rounds fired back then, we will probably be losing artifact collectors well into the future !

The last Civil War fatality was Mr. Sam White, a Civil War artifact collector. He was cleaning an old Naval cannon ball, 75 pounder , in his drive way. The year was 2008, May 5th. Houses 400 yards away were damaged and the authorities decided that no autopsy was necessary

I would be VEWWY CAREFUL with that Cannon Ball, as Elmer Fudd say's, it is probably a Dud, but it could function normally if dropped. A slight bump COULD set it off.
No B.S. , it is probably still capable of reducing YOU and your SHOP into small non recognizable pieces ! It might be a good idea to check with a Civil War collector type Guru and see what they have to say about old Cannon rounds. I hate to be the one to cause you worry but spent almost 30 years making and developing munitions of all kinds and from past experience have found that Hang Fire type thingees can cause you a LOT of grief !
To make a long story shorter, you would be missed by all of us!

Just read an article on MSN News that said it was so cold in Florida that the Iguanas were shutting down all their body functions and starting to fall out of their trees ! Having a 7 to 10 lb. reptile with needle sharp claws and razor sharp spines and scales droppin on your head would certainly MAKE YOUR DAY !

Echo ALL of the comments above concerning BUY IT ALLLLL ! I picked up a couple strips of it that measure 1 1/2 X 4 in. with the fire band running from end to end. I have visions of making a point out of one piece and saving the other for display. I believe the point will wait until I get REEEEALLY GOOOOD at pressure flaking tho ! A piece of that with GOOD fire will almost make an Opal look TACKY !

It looks like there are some Quartz veins exposed on those Granite cliff faces, you should have taken your Gold pan along !
Hind sight is 20-20 right ?

If I were to do anything to that particular Agate , it wouldn't include face polishing OR tumbling !
If not knowing WHAT'S inside was driving ME nuts, I would hand it off to a sphere maker and have myself a SERIOUS display piece ! The shape almost dictates that, and the end result would still bring in a fair return if you got tired of looking at it ! I met a guy near Prarie Du Chein that has about 30 Lakers made into spheres and the drool factor is completely off the scale. Most of his MARBLES are 1 1/4 in. to 1 1/2 in. in diameter.

Anything you do to a Laker other than pick it up and clean it up, WILL, lower the VALUE ! Giving it a coat of oil to bring out the colors and patterns is the ONLY thing you can do without losing some of the VALUE, or a lot of it ! Before I would start sawing or tumbling I would take a trip to Moose Lake Agate Days and check with the vendors in the High School parking lot. Have a look at the rough agates on sale and the prices they get for them. You can also get an idea by doing a search on you-tube for agate sales moose lake. If you had a small specimen, jelly-bean to ping pong ball size, yeah go ahead and have at it ! The size you have is rare and VERY MUCH in demand AS IS. It isn't costing anything to let it set , SOOOOO-
Ya better check BEFORE you start choppin on it !
Check the Moose Lake videos, you will see what I am getting at !
Harley
P.S. I have a Laker in my collection that I paid $5.00 for in a Cedar Rapids rock shop. It weighs close to 3 lbs. and is the size of a large baked potato. SOMEONE spent a LOT of time tumbling the darn thing. If they had left it as-is, it would probably go for at least $2000.00 in the tail gate sales area in Moose Lake.

JC I guess I am making a Hillsbourough' the pointy triangle tang kinda appeals to me. I started running into problems with the base shaping as the coral is a little bit different than the other material I am used to dealing with. I ended up with a little thicker base than I needed and the flakes were stalling out on me. I made a blade type copper punch at the Blacksmith shop today and as soon as I finished supper I got back into the game. It is amazing how easy that Coral will flake with the right tool and a good whack with a Bison leg bone !

Raider,
Got the same problem collecting rock as you do ! I am snowed in on the north end of Waterloo. The fastest , bestest way of finding LOTS OF QUALITY tumbling material would be to contact Catmandewe, that's Tony out in Idaho.
That's all you need to know about acquiring tumbling material, PROMISE !

Most fair size towns have a bearing sales and service dealer of one kind or other. Get the number off the end of the bearing and get to calling around. You will probably get a replacement bearing for pennies on the dollar compared to going direct to the manufacture.
EXAMPLE
I own a 10 inch Raytech slab and trim saw. The factory will NOT under any circumstances send ME a set of replacement bearings. I am NOT qualified to replace them myself ! I HAVE to buy the WHOLE bearing, shaft and housing assembly from THEM.
COST -------- $95.00 plus shipping !
(11), ELEVEN HOURS after I replaced the assembly and realigned the blade the bearings shot craps AGAIN !
I decided the game was over because they obviously do not have anyone at the factory that is qualified either.
I took the (tits up ) bearing assembly to the local bearing dealer and told the counter man what the problem was and we started going thru catalogs. Here's one the guy says, it was a bearing assembly out of a truck's water pump! I Pressed the old collar onto the shaft and trued up the face in my lathe before I threw it back in the saw, and started sawing like someone possessed . I kept track of the hours on the saw for 6 months and gave up trying to log the hours. That was 2 years ago ! The cost was $5.65 per assembly minus 25% discount for buying in quantity. This one looks like it's going to live forever and what I am going to do with the other 5 bearing assemblies I haven't a clue !
If you bother to do a little calling you may find a BETTER bearing for a whole bunch less.
Factory service and quality products / jest ain't what they usta was !
If you are not into (do it yourself ) you could let an electric motor repair shop look at it and give you a quote. Some of those old boy's find a project like that a refreshing change of pace !

Might want to get a GFI adapter plug for the end of the cord on the equipment. That way you can use it in any standard plug in. That would give you the option to move it anywhere you want to run it. They run about $12.00 in most Hdw. stores.

Great lookin cab.
I started working on one of the spalls you sent me a while back but didn't get the great looking high gloss shine you did ! Mine came out really rough around the edges and rather primitive looking.
