Then got swept up and thrown away !! Material are an agate, an obsidian, green I dont know what that was very soft, a dark tiger eye and two corals from the same slab. Attachments:

Here is my first cab....got my machine 93 1/2 percent finished ...lol....I need to redo my spray shrouds....I design on the fly and well I flew to far with the rotozip and cut my buckets/ shrouds too much but nonetheless I was eager to try it out !....so here is my first try....pretty good I think....There is something I learned while learning to play my saxophone ( I was an adult first time instrument player at the time) and that is that just because you can read individual notes and can make individual sounds come out does not mean by any stretch that you can read and play music !! So it is with cabbing !! Its one thing to put a shine on a rock yet quite another to create a nice cab....This was a broken corner of what I believe to be some sort of agate....obviously it is freeform...the dome it is not even and is rather flat....and the corners are not quite as well polished as the main body....but all in all I am beaming with joy over creating a pretty cab with a machine I built !!......I will post a pic of the machine later.........all comments and suggestions are welcome......oh and by the way......this was sanded through the 3000 grit wheel.....havent tried the cerium oxide on leather yet.................... I am in the process of building my own cabbing machine ...I've already bought the diamond wheels , a leather spin on disk, dop wax and cerium oxide...wheels are 100 / 220 hard wheels and 280,600,1200 and 3000 soft diamond wheels......not galaxy and not nova......I picked up pillow block bearings at the local hardware star.....and ordered a 6 wheel shaft from lortone........for the shaft I also ordered the end nuts an a pulley........the reason I asked about the genie shaft lenth is because I saw long shafted buffer motors online and was wondering why folks were not just buying those and putting wheels on them to in effect create homemade genies.............something I will likely try at some point in the future..........once I get my machine all together this will be my first attempt at cabbing...................

I already have a pdf of their catalog...it does not say in it how long the shafts are.....
ohh.....I dont think I can tell you why.......it's a secret......lol lol...........
seriously though , I was looking at the pics of the genies and all they are are a long shaft grinder/ buffer motor with the wheels and gaurds added......I just wondered how long the shafts were so I knew what to look for when I start looking for a motor to base a home built "genie" on......just from looking at the pics I can see that with the three 6X1 1/2 wheels that the shafts have to be at least 6 1/2 inches to accomodate the wheels and have at least an inch between them. Now considering there looks to be a thrust bearing next to the motor housing the shaft would need to be another 3/8 inch or so. Lastly you have to have at least a half inch of threads on the end of the shaft for the end nut. Since I could not find , either by reason of my own failure to look close enough or that it's just not in the catalog , the diminsions of the shaft I thought I would ask a bunch of folks who use the genie every day...........

Scott, yes I had just been on the phone with them before I made the posting. I also ordered a pulley, spacers , bushings and end nuts for the shaft......they said it would be in the mail by Wednesday......and that they would call with the grand total.......
John , yep I agree with you about their parts costs. An excellent price on a ready made shaft to be sure. Covington sells one for something like 130 bucks and kingsley has a shaft with pillow blocks and a pulley for 42 dollars but it is only 12 inches long......it would be good for two or three wheels. Any more would be just too cramped......

Just hought I would let you self builder know of a good thing...I just ordered fro Lortone a shaft that they use in their 6 inch 6 wheel cabber...its 3/4 inch and tapped at the ends for spin on disks...It only cost me 38.50 plus shipping !!.....Honestly I was a little surprised that they were willing to sell a replacement part to be used in a homemade machine...

I am in the process of building my own cabbing unit.....hopefully I will have it running soon.....the point here though is that it's cabs like yours and others I see on this site that make me want to make my own !! there are many plain and simple things that that are so underappreciated ...such as rocks !!....I don't know very much about rocks as to what is what.....but I can certainly appreciate beauty when I see it !!.....and each time I log on here and look at what you folks are doing with plain and simple rocks my breath is taken and my mind wonders at the beauty that I behold........I hope someday to be posting on here pics of cabs of my own........but until then I will keep looking and admiring !!.......

Belts
Dec 30, 2011 6:48:36 GMT -5
Post by cccbock on Dec 30, 2011 6:48:36 GMT -5
Ok I am a future newb ....in other words I don't cab yet but am planning to buuild a machine in the coming weeks. I understand he superiority of diamond and will use as much diamond accessories as I can but I do have some questions. 1. As far as life span goes how do diamond belts fair against diamond wheels such as the nova and flexwheels ?
2. I read on a lapidary supply website that as far as grit grade goes that a 600 grit SC belt will cut similar to an 1800 grit diamond belt. Is that true? Or even close to true?
3. I was thinking of initially buying 100 grit and 220 grit SC wheels to get me started. Now suppose I really like cabbing and find myself doing 15 or more in a week , how long can I expect the SC wheels to last before I need to replace them?
That's all for now. I am sure I will need allot of guidance along the way as I travel along , so thanks in advance......Charles

I have been planning on building a cabbing unit for a long time and am going to finally do it. I got a Lortone Exac Span 8x3 wheel cheap. But as I have been looking at belts for it , locating diamond belts specifically for it seems an impossible task. My question is this, has anyone here tried the belts made for the expando drums with the exac span? 25 1/8 vs 25 7/32 .....does the 3/32 difference make that big of a difference?.......
