I'm starting to think I should keep my crappy Petoskeys and unload them on you guys. I not sure how to market Petoskey rejects. I'd probably call them just that. Do like they do on Ebay and elsewhere - give them an A, B, C rap rating... Tommy

Well Folks, it's countdown time now, all procedures have "taken place" regarding transfer domain, transfer forum admin, FB groups admin. We are just waiting for the registrar transfer of the .com to complete - this is in the hands of the registrars. It's going to be VERY hard for me coming here and not logging in as admin after 15 years or so - but thats the way the cookie crumbles. When I next do a batch of rock - I will come over, join and post some pics for old times sake I wish you all the very best for the future and hope the forum continues to grow and move from strength to strength. For those who know me on Facebook - I'll see you round as usual. Best Regards Mark

I've never seen a newsletter since I have been here. Yes, major bummer! Thank you for giving it a shot, Tommy. Mark does not seem to realize the value of this site is it's members. He seems to think it is worth more than it is, typical. What can we do if he won't listen to reason? How about if we devalue it for him, or at least get him to see how important all of us are to the viability of the site? I propose we ALL boycott the site, just for two days, to show him what the loss of the members would do. Without us, it is nothing, and may make it look less attractive to prospective buyers. Two days at first, maybe a week the next time. After that, he may listen to reason, and his price may come down. I have worked for a business that was sold, and I was one of the commodities that went with it. It sucked! RockPicker!!!!!! "He seems to think it is worth more than it is, typical.". Ouch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was having a kind of (but true) light hearted chat the other day (both on and offline) about not wanting to hand it over for what I considered a clapped out banger of a car. Here is the kind of thing. I think I look at that "thing" and say - "Is that all RTH is actually worth to someone?". I have to say "no" to myself - it is worth more than a clapped out banger. However, is it worth a brand new car? Equally - no it is not. (I am not actually looking for a car - just a comparison). Personally - I look at it from different angles. The rocktumblinghobby.com domain itself. At the end of the day - the domain is key to everything we have here on the forum. I know people have different views on where the value is, but from my perspective, the domain is the driver. Without it - we have no forum. That is absolutely not debateable - its a fact. Without a domain I wouldn't have been able to start the forum, the domain did, still does, and always will - guide people here to the forum. The forum. Handing over admin rights isn't easy for me you know. However I am realistic - just because ***I*** have 15 years worth of sentimental value in something, does not lead me to expect that a prospective buyer should see fit to increase their offer in recognition of my sentiment. My sentiment is my own - non-transferable. The future - well, I have not gone outside the forum yet to sell - I hope I dont have to. There are many places I can put a reserve down and create an auction. I have offered it on the forum..... a) Because I 100% know that a business minded individual will be able to turn a profit (and therefore this hopefully (in my benefit) adds value to the domain and therefore the sale price) - fairly standard way of looking at things. b) Because I want it to be run by someone into rocks - not someone who knows nothing about the hobby. c) Because not only would it be best run by someone into rocks/lapidary etc - a member of the forum who is into rocks would be even better - because they *know* the forum. I do hope that it all comes good from within the forum - for everyone. I know its worth more than a cruddy car. I can't value it at a new car by a long shot - so somewhere is a balance. I haven't been able to place a value on it - but cars seem to be a good way of looking at things - for me at least. At the end of the day - if nobody values the site at an amount I can sit with, its not going to be like I hold a grudge or anything daft - I will just accept that the reality is a mis-match of valuation - no big issue - and I will keep it - I wouldn't just "shut it all down".

There is mention of a newsletter on the main site. It says there that the information submitted for that will never be sold. Does that affect the value of this sale? I mean to third parties - so that people who sign up don't get emails from both RTH AND third parties (who would probably sell it again and again). However if its a problem - I can delete the list no worries.

On the forum URL - captbob mentioned it.
Proboards do a deal where the URL can be "forum.rocktumblinghobby.com" for $14 a year - that sort of thing.

Yes - proboards is a free hosted forum. RTH.com drives the forum. The way it stands at the moment, the RTH.com owner would "run" this board as they choose. I would think it beneficial to keep it - without any shadow of a doubt.

There is no 100 post rule. Scammers are caught out naturally. Great friendships can be formed over a spot of trading.
Some people take a chance and buy, some don't. Most payment processors offer some kind of protection if the transaction complies.
My philosophy is along the lines of giving people a chance until they prove they aren't worth it, instead of assuming they aren't worth it from the off. There are exceptions and these are normally fairly obvious.
My philosophy isn't for everyone though. I feel that with an individuals common sense in place, the harm:gain ratio falls favourably to the right for both seller and buyer.
My two cents:)

All,
Time to settle on a favorite place for all your photos, one which everyone can use (if they need/want to).
Primarily though, one which I can write a tutorial for and sticky it on here somewhere.
If you have a photo storage facility online, which allows you to link to images from other sites (like this), is easier than photobucket (which people seem to have probs with) - please post it here.
Once we are up and running with ad free (not long now) - maybe I could buy some space somewhere if there is anything left to spend. Its fairly cheap - but we need reliable.
Thats for down the line though - for now - if you have a favorite photo site - pls share here.
(Im looking at imgur.com at the mo).
Thanks Mark

I would actually have a good go at this if I had the time, and frame some designs as they look quite good when done. I don't know where people get the time from these days!
