Thank you so very much Don. It is good to hear this from time to time. Our hard work seems thankless at times and comments like these make all the headaches and arrow dodging worth it. Thank you sir. Christopher

The BLM in now showing better maps or easier to find on their web site Vs the e-mail I titled on LA Rocks "Big Brother wants to know??) on 05/09/2014 Go to the URL below www.amlands.org/6652/362434.htmland you will find Supplemental Maps www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/cdd/west_mojave__wemo/wemo_maps.htmlOn just one I click, Afton Canyon Subregion (You can enlarge the map-wilderness study area) I see that AC9606 and AC9616 will be blocked if the area is made into a wilderness area. I do know that 100's of you in the past have collected in the area from angle wing agate, tube agate, jaspers, saginite and fluorite and many other great rocks. Please!!! Let the BLM know all the areas/roads you do not want closed. This Rockaholic thanks you Input from Rockhounds is needed NOW. Here are two things you can do: 1.) Attend any of the four BLM meetings scheduled in the next month -- Tue, Mar 31 in Ridgecrest, Thu, Apr 2, in Victorville, Thu, Apr 7, in Lone Pine, and Wed, Apr 15, in Yucca Valley; 2.) Write a comment letter (email to: cawemopa@blm.gov). Tell the BLM which roads and camping and staging areas need to stay open. To be effective, comments should list specific place names, roads or geographic markers. Cogent comments that stick to facts and cite specifics will be more productive for advocating rockhounding interests than general remarks about keeping the whole desert open or criticizing the values of other groups. BLM has to weigh competing interests, so it can only help to stress that permitting collecting and the way responsible rockhounds go about it is consistent with/not contrary to the ethical standards for preserving the natural environment. West Mojave (WEMO) Draft Plan Released WEMO Public Meetings The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has released the Draft Amendment to the California Desert Conservation Area (CDCA) Plan and Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) for the West Mojave Route Network Project, providing guidance and management direction for over three million acres of public lands in San Bernardino, Inyo, Kern, Riverside and Los Angeles counties. If you Rockhound or just recreate in the Mojave Desert please visit the ALAA WEMO Page at: www.amlands.org/6652/362434.htmlPlease become familiar with the plan and the restrictions for access and try to attend one of the up coming meetings to make the voice of the Rockhound be heard! Tues., March 31: Kerr-McGee Center, Pinnacles Room, 100 W California Ave, Ridgecrest Calif. Thurs., April 2: Hilton Garden Inn, 12603 Mariposa Rd, Victorville, Calif. Tues., April 7: Lone Pine Community Center, Stratham Hall, 138 Jackson St, Lone Pine, Calif. Wed., April 15: Yucca Valley Community Center Complex, Yucca Room, 57090 Twentynine Palms Highway, Yucca, Calif. --

Well there is still a long way to go. One environmental group alone changing their wording may not be enough. But if more of us got involved and we each contributed some...well then maybe we could collectively make big changes!!!

There were three rock hounds that showed up and spoke (myself included) We actually got one of the environmental groups to change the language of their proposal. Instead of saying " closed to all mining" it now reads "Closed to mechanized mining" so hand tools would still be allowed. They requested we submit location information of areas we would like to be considered to stay open for rock-hounding. So if any of you would be willing to add your spots here I can add it to a list to submit.
Sorry it took me so long to update this. I get real busy no a days and do not get on here as much as I would like to.

I have spent some time on the DRECP website and it appears we have problem. Rockhounds are in danger of losing two well known local collecting spots to solar and/or wind farm development. Both Lonely Butte aka Brown Butte and Gem Hill lie directly in the Development Focus area of the DRECP. Both of these spots are in the Gem Trails of Southern California books and have been used by Rockhounds for decades. The Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan (DRECP), a major component of California's renewable energy planning effort. It is designed to streamline and fast track the permitting process for huge solar and wind development in the California Deserts. The pink areas on the attached maps are marked as Development focus areas. There will be little or no further hearings on development in the focus areas. The projects will be essentially already approved in these areas. The required meetings for comments are currently in progress. There is one in Lancaster next Monday. Please attend if you can to make it known we want to be able to continue to access these areas and keep them open for future generations of Rockhounds. Public Meeting for the Draft Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan (DRECP) EIR/EIS - Lancaster, CA Monday, November 3, 2014 4:00-6:30 p.m. Lancaster City Hall Council Chambers 44933 N. Fern Ave. Lancaster, CA 93534 Public comments can also be submitted in writing. Go to the website: drecp.org for information on how to comment, maps and much more. I have created a Facebook Page - Save Gem Hill & Lonely Butte to unit Rockhounds and provide information on how to comment and what to do as I figure it out myself. Speak up or we may loose these awesome spots. Ruth Hidalgo
