I bet you can fit a lot of materials in there, though. It's only time...

I love USPS boxes. Great sizes, sturdy, easy to stack, LOL, although I think the real problem is just storage. Great assortment of materials.

Looking forward to seeing future posts to see how this goes. Is that a rhodochrosite piece in the lower right?

Welcome back, Paul. Little do you know, but it was your trip report about Dobell's that sparked my interest in going there. So, a couple years ago, the wife and I went out there and had a great time. The information you provided was invaluable. Thanks and regards. Hey Buddy! Great to hear that the directions and such came in handy. Glad you guys had a great time! Thanks for the welcome and it is nice to be back.

Could be. As often happens, I organize things into Rubbermaid containers, get them stacked nice and neatly and then totally forget what I have. I think aliens left it for me. I honestly don't recall where or how I got this! LOL We just moved, been in the works for a few years as we went through our buckets and crates to slim things down. Found very literally tons of things we had forgotten. As we unpack we are surprised once again. either we are experiencing the bright side of the onset of dimensia or we have too many rocks. Hahahaha ... that was good...

Welcome back! Glad to see you're getting a chance to enjoy some of those fine pieces you found in Cortez.
That is a beautiful part of the country. Used to go to Blue Mesa Reservoir on the Gunnison River 25-30 years ago, and always enjoyed it. That was long before I started cutting, though, so we passed right through Cortez and I never knew what I was missing.
... and some of the best Mexican food I've run across - found it in Cortez!

You remind me of a saw project I have on the back burner. My husband's hobby has taken every single cubic millimeter of room that we have and room we don't have. Until we move to a bigger place, I live vicariously through you guys. That garnet looks really cool. Do you know any more about it?
LOL... my wife requested (ordered?) me to buy a shed and move everything out there so she could park her Pilot back in the garage. Years later (starting last week), she's back parking the driveway, LOL! That garnet is interesting. My friend is a professional geologist and has come into some really interesting stuff over the years. I think he told me he got this way back in college. Unfortunately, I don't have much more history on it. He also provided the core sample I slabbed for him (https://forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/78054/core-sample-cuts-photos-added).

Welcome back. The wood is remindful of Blue Forest wood, from ?wyoming? Could be. As often happens, I organize things into Rubbermaid containers, get them stacked nice and neatly and then totally forget what I have. I think aliens left it for me. I honestly don't recall where or how I got this! LOL

rockjunquie, I fell in love with western Colorado. Beautiful area. A week was not enough time to see everything. We spent a few days in Grand Junction and Cortez doing the national parks and eating a lot. beefjello, Pat, and jasoninsd, yes, you can definitely overspend there. Or max out your credit card. Should I ever find myself back in Cortez, I'll budget an afternoon (and a lot of money, to Jason's point) to get back to this shop! And Happy Belated Birthday, Pat! --Paul

I finally had a chance to get back to the hobby after a multi-year hiatus. Part of the driver was a block of garnet (photos below) that a friend wanted me to slab for him. Years ago. Then life got really busy and the equipment was stored. And that block just sat there ... staring at me ... So, last weekend, out came the saw and the vib laps got cleaned and restarted. Next weekend the tumblers start up. Eventually, I'll get the trim saw and disks dusted off, serviced, and re-started as well. The saw needed some servicing and maintenance. It's a DIY setup that I picked up from deedolce back in 2012. Hope she's still around. I thinks she picked it up from someone else on the forum. Still going strong. Saw, following some cleanup: First up, my buddy's garnet block: Sorry for the Sharpie lines. Close ups of the first couple of slabs: While I was at it, I started scrounging around in the shed and discovered some petrified wood that was waiting to be cut. I don't recall how we acquired this. The end cuts were nice. My hobby has again taken over the garage so we're parking my wife's Pilot out in the driveway (again). Nice to be back in the hobby again and enjoying everyone's works of art.

Been a while since I had the time and opportunity to post anything. Back in July 2019, we spent our summer vacation in western Colorado. One of the stops was Cortez, down in the south west corner of the state. The town had a great gem and mineral shop called "San Juan Gems". Terrific store. Picked up some great pieces but wished I had a much bigger budget to work with. Here's some pics of the shop along with what we bought. I'm trying out Flickr for the first time (yeah, I know ... finally coming into the 20th century, Paul?) so I hope the photos show up correctly. Seem to in preview mode. Store Interior. Lots of cabbed, cut, set and polished items: Side Yard: Lots of material, all over the place ... Two years later, I'm finally getting around to cutting some of the materials. End cuts:
If I'm ever back in southwestern Colorado, this is a place I'd definitely head back to. Good to be back in the hobby again. Thanks for checking out the thread. --Paul

Looking good, sir! Never had a chance to try out the agua nueva agates. Really beautiful material. Thanks! I ordered a couple of pounds from The Gem Shop. I may have to get some more, I dremeled that preform last night and it played nicely. I'll put a picture up here in a bit. Excellent! Looking forward to seeing/following the work. Thanks for the reminder. I keep forgetting that The Gem Shop has some great inventory.

Outstanding pieces, Brian! I seem to recall, some years back, that you found some in some landscaping rock along a fast-food drive through, as well. It's been a while since I've had time for the hobby and board so maybe I'm mixing things up! Nice pickups!
