Love the last two. Could imagine all sorts of designs with the second to last. The last simply has an amazing colour.

Great entries Kurt, I always enjoy your eye candy. Good luck with the competition. Cheers Thank you. No worries about "competition". Its more about finding out what contests are looking for, and how it compares with other entries. I'm not a finish-freak, so I'm sure to be miles behind other entries. Your always good for some eye candy and partly responsible for my growing piles. Someday I'll have to actually do something productive with them. Thank you. Now lets see you getting started, collecting is fine, but creating is better (even if things turn to dust and rubble from time to time )

Heck, I don't know. I never actually had anyone interested in them. (except lowballs) Let's talk, come September. Right now I need to save for a home trip to Europe. I'm always interested in high quality Montana's by the slabs, or oddballs for carving. I rather pay the price for a good slab, than cheap stuff by the tonn just to get a few useful pieces.

Great artistry, I really dig the two-sided tree...Great carvings on great material. Cheers. Yeah, wish there would be more of that type of material out there. Only ever got two slabs and this is the last of it.

Hi there. Got "Outback" as our theme for this months challenge. Had a few options and went with the last piece I got from this wonderful Biggs. As the challenge lends itself to quite a few landscape materials, I went with this one, as the colour is strong, and it has a wonderful mixture of traditional jasper with Opal and Agate interspersed. But being me I want to take it one step further. So my personal challenge is to utilize the material and yet still impart something that makes sense to me. Unlike regular carving, where one tries to create something to stand out from the background. my intention here is to keep cuts shallow in order to keep the background in focus, and only then making one aware that there is more to be seen. I think I failed with the flat side, as the face got too deep, so even if everything is properly sanded and polished it will stand out from any angle. Pictures are taken to show carving for now. I think side two (rounded) might fare better. Cuts are shallower and wider distributed. So head on, the tree should merge into the background. Gotta work the next few days, so update should be ready somewhere around Monday. Thanks for looking, Kurt

Neither am I, but once started a lot more things are possible than assumed. I could have never imagined a few years ago, to carve anything, and participating in international competitions was as removed as another universe.

Outstanding carving Kurt. The contests like that are the one thing I miss about that FB group. Come on in over. We started an intependent page especially for getting all lapidarists involved in a monthly challenge. Still have to improve the format as we suddenly got some outstanding carvers partaking, scaring the canbers off. You can find us under Lapidary Challenge. Any natural material and any style goes. Numbers are small for now, but quality is good.

Have not read the links, but can imagine that the Mediterranean sea at one point was an inland-lake. So Africa would have been joined by a landmass with Europa until fairly recently.

Outstanding octopus carving, kk! How did you remove the stichtite in serpentine material from around its legs, head and the octagon-shaped frame? ?? This is very soft material. Dremel, burrs and cutting-blade. This is one piece.
