Nice bunch of tumbles, saxplayer. I see what you've been up to while I was away. Just pumping out the 'best of' in every batch, apparently. I'm always a fan of high end material turned into tumbles, so keep on sharing the pics. Most folks, other than us tumblers, don't enjoy seeing ocean jasper and the like rolling around in a tumbler. It upsets them.

By the way, there has been some great information, as well as great macros, posted in this thread.

Grant, we may be the last of the old schoolers. As much as a guy with a digital camera can be considered old school. I have never stacked photos, nor did I get into High Dynamic Range photos. I learned on an old Canon A-1 and brought the same philosophy to digital. I do some post processing on Photoshop to crop, brighten, adjust levels and such, much like you would in a darkroom. I like the images you can get from the new software advances, but I still prefer to try to get what I want by changing lenses, lighting, ISO, aperture, angle, etc. to get the picture to look the way I envision in my head. I guess I'm not ready to turn everything over to my camera and computer just yet.

Welcome from Kentucky, Isabel. I'm sure you are already aware, but you are less than an hour drive from some great tumbling material at Flint Ridge. If you've already been there and have some tumbles to show, we'd love to see them. Pictures are always welcome here.

Wow, those are some beauties, Chuck. That's some high-grade material, I'm glad it found it's way into your hands for proper treatment. Thanks for the show, not even going to attempt a favorite!

Beautiful tumbles! You picked up some great material out there, it appears no two are alike.

More rotary tumblers, single barrel Lot-O will be a formula for happiness.

My favorite has to be the first two group shots in the bowl. Great photos, lots of color and shine on those rocks. That's some good looking and rare tumbling material in that batch. The Imperial takes such a wet shine, you're eyes are just drawn to it. Beautiful. Looks like you are having fun with the new lens.

Welcome from Kentucky! I see from your other thread that you are excited to do a cleanout and get this first batch moved along. Also, that you are considering a Lot-O purchase. You and me, we got a lot in common. I did buy a Lot-O before my first batch of stones were done in the rotary and I know I produced a far superior final product than I would have with rotary tumbling alone. (Much respect to the rotary only tumblers) That machine is very forgiving, even for a first time user, who is usually trying to polish a bunch of rocks that don't belong in the same barrel together (guilty). Keep your rotary tumbler(s) open for rough grinding that first stage and move everything to the vibe when you have enough ready to move to stage two. That, and have patience in the first stage, with those Bots especially. They are tough and take a while to round out, but it's worth the wait.

Nice work on all of them. I'm a fan of the tiger eye, bahia and Gary green, myself. Oh, and the Sumatran. Looking forward to pics with your new lens.

jamesp, I can't imagine how much time could be spent photographing all that amazing glass. Countless scenes, colors and patterns. Thanks for letting me take a run at some of this fine subject matter. Thoroughly enjoying it!

Those are some nice Bot slices, they'll make nice magnets. That rock you found is wild, hope it take a decent shine for you. Those would look good on the fridge, too. Glad to see you're having fun with your new toy!

Yep, as a guy who hates cold and the ugly white c**p. I was not happy to see seven days of that garbage. It stops being pretty after you take a couple of falls on the ice trying to cut dead oak trees for firewood cause you are down to burning expensive lumber from the barn to stay warm, Insult to injury, all the trees I could cut for firewood were covered in an inch of ice. I had to crack the ice off every piece I cut with my friggin rock hammer and prop it in front of the fireplace to dry out before burning. Managed to keep temps in front of the fire in low 50's but had to tend the fire 24/7 because we have a heatalater and since the fan was electric, could not close the front or it would not generate enough heat. Had to sleep in shifts, tote buckets of water for the toilets and washing etc. All of it an experience I'd not like to ever repeat. I believe that's the longest I've ever gone without a shower even when considering long rockhounding trips to the desert. I'm now building a humongous wood pile so I NEVER HAVE TO CUT WOOD IN THE FRIGGIN SNOW AGAIN! I really don't know how you northerners live in that stuff. PS: About two days into this Hell I was wanting to take Al Gore and John Kerry, stand them in front of my house, squirt them with water and use their frozen carcasses for lawn ornaments. Maybe with a sign that said " Support global warming" It's because we all look like this: (Just watched this again for the umpteenth time the other day! ) Can you skin Griz???

I'm no competition for the likes of Randy and others but I did a few with an ancient Nikon D70 with a high end Nikon 24-85 f2.8 1:2 macro on it's last leg. All manual since all auto systems are broken on the lens and camera. Assuming not-rock photos are allowable. The death hole or 'down the hatch'. A play on short depth of field and light passing thru color patterned translucent vascular flesh. Thanks I remember when you took those, Jim. Those are great shots! That death tube is hypnotic, but deadly, no doubt. Flowers, like rocks, provide a lot of macro opportunities. I thought you may recognize a couple of my shots above. They are a product of your skunk works laboratory down there, after all. I'm having fun checking out the countless compositions, so expect a few more. There will likely be a dedicated thread on these before long, though. I don't want to flood this thread. I'm plan on taking some of my favorite of these abstract macros and get them printed on canvas to hang in my man cave basement. Your glass is going to fill in some holes with colors and patterns I just can't find in rocks alone.
