Go to a home improvement store. In the area with ceiling fans Look for a Fan Speed Control.
-- Do Not -- use a Lighting Dimmer on an AC Motor

When I started tumbling, almost 3 years ago, was having trouble getting my first Shine to come out right. So I bought extra barrels for all my machines to do the polish in.
Eventually I discovered that it was my technique that was keeping the shine away and not cross contamination between stages.
These days, I use the same barrel all the way through the polishing process, but I do a Wash between all the stages.
My wash is just the Rocks with Plain Water filled to the top of the barrel, No plastic beads, No Ceramic Filler. I have been getting some excellent Shine just doing this. I use plastic beads in stage 3 (600) and above. I use the same beads in all the batches in all the stages without any problems.
Now I know that the extra barrels are Not needed, but they are nice to have around for Spare Parts.

Rule #10
10. Judges look for the following: polish left in cracks, flaws in the workmanship (not the rock), coatings or anything that brings out the polish other than the work and wheel marks on the stone. Wheel marks will disqualify the applicant
Then they complain about the cracks and defects in the rock ?!

Here is Rule #1
1. Mail or email the submission form between January 1 and June 1. The earlier you submit, the more time you have to work the rock.

Way Way Back when I only had a 3 pound Tumbler I built a Cleanout Sink with Grit recovery. Then I didn't mind too much if there was unused grit being cleaned out every week because I was still keeping and reusing it.

I had trouble with it breaking down in my 33b. Even ran it extra days and there would still be abnormal amounts not breaking down. I’m gonna give it a whirl in my 6lb coming up quick. I have used 30 Grit in my QT66 for 3 years now it always breaksdown in a week for me

My Lortone 3A Tumbler uses 25 watts of electricity, The QT66 uses 52 watts for a total of 77 watts for both machines. Around here electricity cost about 10 cents per kilowatthour (KWH). So it takes 13 hours using 77 watts to use 10 cents of power.
1 hour = .077 KWH = .8 cents 1 day = 1.85 KWH = 18.5 cents 1 week = 12.95 KWH = $1.30 1 month 31 days = 57.35 KWH = $5.74 1 year = 675.25 KWH = $67.53

I lost interest and stopped tumbling for almost 6 months. But I still logged into RockTumblingHobby everyday. The interest came back and been rolling nonstop for a year now.

Look around in your area for Sandblasting Supplies They should carry a good assortment of Abrasives suitable for rock tumbling
